every message board forum abortion debate i've ever read thru goes something like this at some point:

Crapflower: i'm pro-choice but i don't agree with women using it as a form of birth control

Rottenmilkblossom: women DON'T use it as a form of birth-control. every women i know who's had an abortion had this, like, totally legit reason and stuff . . . .

so here's my question: since surgical abortions are relatively safe and since barring total abstinence they are the most effective form of birth control that exists, what would be so wrong about a women making the choice to use abortion as birth-control if that is the choice that works best for her? not saying everyone should do that but if someone else wanted to, what is there to get so defensive about?

unless, of course, you aren't pro-choice

    (i hope this makes sense)

I recently heard the best pro-choice argument I've ever heard.
Is an acorn a tree? Then a fetus ain't a human.

    Science yo.

I'd say having multiple abortions would not be too healthy.

I dont agree with it when its being done when thhe woman is in a stable relationship, making money and basically okay with having a baby coming along

and I dont agree with it being done more than 2 times, if you end up pregnant more than even 3 times and had an abortion, just tie your tubes or close your legs

Correct but there are health risks that are associated with any form of birth control other than total abstinence. Even latex condoms or condoms with spermicide can increase a woman's chances of getting a urinary tract infection.

So, my question is, if an individual woman wants to make the choice to use abortion as birth control . . . . and remember the pro-choice slogan "My Body My Choice"

So, why not? Who's business is it unless you're all together anti-choice?

Having surgery- and all the risks associated - every time you get pregnant can't be good on the body.
Infact it has to be the dumbest thing to do when wanting to terminate pregnancies over a long period of time.
So, if I a woman wants to be dumb, and a doctor is dumb enough to allow this to occur - what can I do but *sigh*.
If it was my g/f I'd reconsider the relationship, because clearly I had picked a dummy..

The fetus, zygote, patch of cells, baby or whatever you wish to call it is just as dead if the woman who's womb it resided in prior to having been aborted is NOT in a stable relationship, is living in poverty is NOT basically okay with having a baby come along or has had NO abortions previously.

Because abortion is a last resort and something you do if you feel it is best, not something to be taken so lightly you use it instead of condoms or a pill:rolleyes: Not to mention the financial and physical drains-multiple abortions will take their toll on a womans body and mind and, in places with free healthcare, put an enormous strain on the system

Also life IS precious...I dont think most pro choicers are completely uncaring about lifes value, even in early pregnancy-I know Im certainly not. I just realise there are circumstances where abortion needs to be done. Being knocked up when you knew itd happen but you couldnt be bothered to use a condom isnt one of them...what needs to happen there is that woman needs to take a look at her values, and personally Id be tempted to give her a hard slap for being so stupid

Its not difficult to have enough responsibility to use contraception rather than putting yourself through terminated pregnancy after terminated pregnancy. Its understandable that people wont support an "It doesnt matter-Ill just abort it!" kind of mentality. This is still life and these matters need to be treated with respect and maturity

Surgical Abortions generally take about 3 or 4 min. to perform and are relatively safe and again, birth control pills, norplant, the IUD, CHILDBIRTH ect. all involve some level of risk.

I'm ABSOLUTELY NOT arguing that women should use abortion as a form of birth-control or trying to equate abortion with going thru the driving-thru at mcdonald's for a happy meal.

But, again, if a woman chooses to, and again we're talking about the "Pro-CHOICE movement" . . . .

Odon is right though-Its not just the surgery, but the mental strain, the physical strain of all those hormones rushing about and body changes, potentially every few months if someone is literally using abortion as birth control, which is not a natural state for a body to be in that many times

Also where would this acceptance end? Would this have a limit of over 20 weeks like other abortion (I take it it would seeing as you see them as the same thing-maybe someone so irresponsible just couldnt be bothered to get it done sooner) If so, thats definitely physical strain...and, to be honest, a bit sick

Childbirth is a mental strain and so is having to get injections, take pills, talk partners into using condoms ect. and it would be pretty near impossible to get pregnant every few months anyhow. As for it not being a "natural state" - in a natural environment a woman would have her 1st child by about age 16 or so and would be pregnant again every 2 to 4 yrs. throughout her childbearing yrs.

Again, I'm NOT arguing abortion as contraceptive but who decides?

At what point does judgement end? There are very many people who vehemently oppose birth-control and sex outside of marriage. Woman who use birth control other than barrier methods can experience breakthrough ovulations and in those cases the contraceptives cause chemical abortions. There are rabid Pro-lifers who believe Norplant is murder.

So, again, if an individual woman chooses to use abortion as a form of birth control, who's business is it?

Firstly the "strain" of "talking about condoms" with partners should be NOTHING compared to abortion if an adult is of sound mind. Sorry but comparison of the two just shows how you dont realise how big an issue this is, for people on BOTH "sides" of the debate. Life is still life. Im pretty sure using birth control is not traumatic...abortion on the other hand can be and often is

Secondly I never argued otherwise about natural pregnancy. Yes, were built to get pregnant in our teens. We can reproduce every couple of years. But this has nothing to do with using abortion as birth control, which as I said potentially could mean a pregnancy every couple of MONTHS...indefinitely! This is NOT natural for the body and thats the point I was making

Its my right to say I think a woman would be pretty wrong to do that. Its everyones right who has voiced this opinion. We have very good reasons, a lot of which dont soleley affect the woman in question, like for example the strain on healthcare systems. Besides which, you said you were talking about people bringing up this point in debates, not to women whove aborteds faces, so in these cases no personal judgements were happening

Im not a judgemental person, but you asked the question of why people see this as wrong and these are my answers. If I knew a woman who got pregnant ever few months because she could "just get rid" as sure as fuck tell her what I thought of her-I feel shed need to hear it. Yes, its her choice. But I will not agree or just let something that massive slip without standing up for decency and respect for life

I think this is miles away from people who oppose condom usage. Were potentially talking a woman repeatedly aborting 20 week old foetuses solely because she couldnt be bothered to use a condom and thinking thats all perfectly ok

So, your arguments against abortion as birth-control are based on the fact that you believe it isn't in the woman's best interest?

But, again, why do you care what her choices are? It's her body isn't it?
