Well, sometimes people need initiative to change themselves, it's often hard to simply snap out of it out of pure self-motivation... especially when it comes to drugs and the like.

Often one girl is everything. The whole "there are many fish in the ocean" attitude simply creates disillusion in people and discourages commitment and a true attempt to win someone over. It's always easier to say "there will be other girls", and that's how you miss out on the good ones and end up while settling on an average one that was easier to get.
