Does anyone have experience with geocaching? Any cool experiences or finds? I am getting a GPS this weekend and going to strike it up as a new hobby. I need to be getting out more, and this just sounds awsome.
I have been Geocaching since 2003..still actively play today..I have found caches on top of mountains, abandoned buildings, sides of rivers, underneath bridges, up the side of buildings..some were very creative and some not so creative. It is a great way to see places that you normally would never see..in over 6 years of caching, I have found over 2000 and hidden around 100..
Cool! What was your coolest find? How often would you say the caches are bunk? Like, you either didn't find anything or the cache was empty? I can't believe I haven't really heard more about this sooner. I look at the listing in my area and there were a bunch, but most haven't been logged as located for months.... would most of those still be there waiting do you think?
yeah, they are still there..urban hides dont last as long as caches that are out in the boonies..a good indicator of whether a cache is there or not is to look at the latest logs..my best finds would either be this one where you have to rappel down the side of a bridge to find..but there have been so many great finds.. Intent of Infinity http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=d5e7336f-3253-480c-826d-c2cc44552def or this one..in shich you navigate rocks up a stream with a series of ropes and rock climbing return to scab island http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=2f29e184-ab39-4545-919e-c81f4e4042f8
looks like fun, but do some players take it one step further by illegally encroaching on private property or government land Hotwater
there are some, but there are rules in place to cover things like that..but there have been many instances of geocaches being blown up by the bomb squad for being placed next to airports, disneyland, etc, etc and being mistaken for being a bomb..
I just bought a Magellan Triton 300, trying to figure this thing out... hopefully I'll be searching by this evening for at least one close by... This is freakin cool.
Good luck Personally I’d be more inclined just to purchase an advanced metal detector in the hope of finding a treasure trove or possibly even the lost dutchman’s mine Hotwater
I found my first TWO!!! They were just pill bottles painted black with a list to sign in them, but it was still pretty cool. There are nearly 500 within about 20 miles of me, better get to work! This is a pretty awsome hobby!
that is the only part about this game that I dont like is the amount of crappy hides you have to wade through..definitely gotta check out the difficulty/terrain ratings./..usually the higher the number the better the cache..good job on your first 2..next you gotta check out what travel bugs are.
Travel bugs? Dude, I didn't realize the GPS didn't come with maps loaded, all it has is that shitty base map that only has the MAJOR highways, kinda lame... I'm gonna buy the national geographic topographical maps tomorrow.
