I was arrested (by campus police) for possession of under a gram of marijuana without intend to sell, possession of paraphernalia (a pipe) and public intox (without formal sobriety test). It was around 5 am on Sewannee campus (I was in my car in a dorm parking lot). I did not intend to drive and did not receive a DUI although my keys were in the ignition. I was not taken to jail on the grounds I give up my keys for the night and stay in the dorms. I was not a student there but I was with one at the time. This was my first arrest and my record was clean (except for maybe a minor fender bender where I bumped into a parked car). I am 22, and am still in school. I'm not quite sure if I have the funds for a lawyer. I need to know what could potentially happen and whether I should get a lawyer. I also got cited for possession of a grinder which was not mine. It belonged to the person I was with (not a minor, I believe). We were caught right after smoking. This happened in TN.
Since when is owning a grinder ILLEGAL? Eh, get a free court appointed lawyer, no matter what get a lawyer. You'll be fine, probally probation, maybe just fines.
tennessee is a 250 dollar fine first offence on weed,, ANY amount as long as its not with intent. so your golden there. the paraphernalia charge is where they are going to fuck you.. up to 1 year in jail and up to a 2500 dollar fine,and its been my experience that any state with slack weed punishments. more than make up for it with paraphernalia punishments. http://norml.org/index.cfm?wtm_view=&Group_ID=4565 i wouldnt worry about the public intox,few hours of community service and that will be wiped off your record.
I went to jail with harder punishment and I got off with a $100 fine and 40 hours community service. Call up the DA and ask for a deal since it's your first time. Tell me your a student and you weren't do anything wrong or harmful to anyone, GL
You want advice! GET A LAWYER. Maybe they fucked up and he get you off. Dont make a deal yourself. GET A LAWYER!!!!!!
I wouldn't suggest talking to the DA yourself. I did that on non drug related charges I had once and when I DID end up having to get a lawyer, she put me on burn for it. Just wait until your initial court appearance and listen to the DA's recommendations, if they are too much for you, plead not guilty and get a lawyer. Are any of those charges felonies in your state? If not, the court WILL NOT appoint you a lawyer, you will have to hire one.
I ended up getting a lawyer. He applied for pre-trial diversion and I'm now on probation for a year, and have 20 hours community service i gotta take care of. Looks like all this is gonna cost me around 1500 bucks but after probation it'll be off my record and I'm not officially convicted of anything so if I try to get a job it's not that bad. The thing is I just want to bonnaroo and got into some stuff. I took ONE very small hit of pot. Also, i probably got a shit ton of of second hand smoke cause it was everywhere. Additionally i had a hit of mdma (.1 grams) and a roll. Ive read that these leave your system fairly fast, but I'm a little concerned about the pot. I was clean for about a month and a half before bonnaroo, so i think that hit should leave my system pretty fast. Also, I dont know if they are legally allowed to test me so soon (it's only been 5 days since my court date).
Second smoke is not a factor. The first hand smoke is. it takes 21-30 days to be sure. Depends when you get tested (likely your 1st meeting w/ probation officer). They can test you now, if they choose.

Hey, if you're worried about the pot, don't worry. Read about dilution. If you have the money, take the drink Strip from GNC-- it's worked for me for pre-employment drug tests (probably easier to pass than probation drug tests), but it's worth it. Some people don't believe it even works, but I practice dilution along with it. You'll be fine!!
Some labs now throw your sample out if they detect any kind dilution i.e. water, carbo/detox drinks, etc.
Man this is fucking rediculous. You guys in the states really have to fight for some better pot laws. I got pulled over by 2 cops a year ago while I was smoking a joint, boxing my car. I butted it out. I had two grams on me. They made me throw the half joint away and crush it and told me to leave my windows down and go home. And you said something about campus police, yea, up here even those guys are stoned when their wandering around campus. RISE ABOVE MY AMERICAN FRIENDS! THE REVOLUTION HAS COME. Just tell your senators you wanna be more like Canada. They'll be like "shit, well those crazy northern fuckers do have the right idea!" And we'll all be smoking peacefully in no time. But you all really need to do something about those horrible nazi laws of yours.
I feel for you man... I cringe when I hear these absolute rediculous stories of people getting busted with the posibility of going to jail, for less than a gram of pot. Things are so different here in Montreal.. We got busted at least 4 times with pot, nothing ever happened. Most of the time they'll turn a blind eye.. good luck with everything
