I propose a question, If morality can exist without worship of a deity what is the point in proclaiming favor to a god? Do humans truly need a divine proclamation telling us how to live our lives? Without it are we doomed to self destruction?
Good question. If someone is only behaving morally because they're afraid of not getting into "heaven" otherwise then would they really belong? I'd be far more comfortable around an atheist who does right because it is right than in the presence of a self righteous prick who's only being moral because he's afraid of oh mighty god's bean counters who are keeping score.
absolutely, but I don't believe in god so fuck you and your stupid post! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmCQzd_gB3s
Lol. Well said, sir. Christians who do good out of fear of not being able to go to heaven are fake robots to me. "TAKE-ME-TO-MY-LEADER"(says with mechanical-robotic voice).
Well although my post was a joke I do argee a lot with yours. They simply comply out of fear. Boring!
Hmmm yeah in general religion suxs But some form of system is needed for the masses not everyone is goodhearted to much control is bad still there haves to be some general rules to follow for the good of everyone. So the very idea that if u do bad things u will be punished for them by god is reasonable form of control in my mind especially back then when human life was cheap. Is int that any deterrent from bad is automatically good. And anyways what is the deferents between being punished by god back in the day or being punished by police in thees days. Sure we would have sens of morality even without religions and laws but it doesn't hurt to have them there just in case.
This is a reason I find those who tend to keep away from organized religion are the most respectable and morally driven people. Most of the Atheists I know do good because they are good people. Most Catholics/Christians/Etc do good to play it safe, and in all actuality, are the most undeserving. I work in a Lutheran church, and it's amazing how disrespectful and self-righteous most of the members of the church are.
It's the same question as "Does God exist?" If God created everything, morality can't exist without God.
Ahhh- I think you're on to something my friend... but is God a renewable energy? Can we run cars off it?
man we need to do right by each other regardless of religion, if we all help each other out it'll come back to us, i know people that get by and live great lives simply because they have friends in the right places, screw religion its mostly fear mongering (an opinion, i realize not all religions are like this)
True. I was thinking a better way of phrasing the question might have been "Do you need to believe in God in order to be moral?" I do think belief can be a selfless thing done for others with no guarantee of reward.
Morality never made man do any more right by others. If anything, the opposite. Yes, I do believe if you do away with God, then you got to do away with morality. You don't want to be a New Age wishy-washy, who says you're spiritual but not religious.
If any of you are familiar with Christopher Hitchen's debates on religion, you should check out this debate between his brother. Both are incredible scholars and true free thinkers. They take questions on religion, morality, as well as war. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zy-Pqzw6tos&feature=related
