The Glass Bead Game is my favourite, and I would say the greatest of Herman Hesse's novels. I was wondering if anyone else round here has read it, or any other of his works?
I haven't read that one, but I have read alot of other Hesse books, Sidhartha, The Fairy Tales of Herman Hesse, Narcisuss and Glodmund, and Demian. My favorites are Sidhartha and The Fairy Tales of Herman Hesse, the later is my absolute favorite, it's a group of short stories that he wrote over a long period, and the stories are not only amazing, but it's amazing to see his style develop over time. It goes from a very cool but "basic" story about a princess and a midget, to a very abstract story about a mountain. The stories are wonderful, my favorite is one about a young boy who is dying and has a dream about everything he would have expierienced in life, love, sadness, loss, and then he can die having known it all. Hesse is definatly one of my favorite authors, but very heavy, personally I have to read him in small doses. I highly recomend Sidhartha and The Fairy Tales, Narcisuss and Goldmund is excellent as well. I read it in 9th grade, it was my introduction to Hesse. I've read it twice since then, it reminds me a bit od Sidhartha, but is definatly worth a read. just a side note here, if you're looking for a good combination, read Sidhartha and then "The Prophet" by Kalil Gibran. It's an amazing combo, and the friend that told me to read the two said it changed his perception of reality entirly, it did the same for me.
