This was intended mostly for the non-Beatles fans, but I suppose Beatles fans can also play. Who was the best band of the 60s (and if you think the Beatles, who was the second best)? I really really like Tommy James and the Shondells, and feel that they were probably the best overall band of the 60s. But I do have to give credit for bands like the Animals and the Jimi Hendrix Experience for their more 'modern' sound and strong sense of composition.
Well I guess it depends on your genre preference. My favorite music is psychedelic rock so the Beatles are my favorite band but my second favorite is Pink Floyd. Most people think of Pink Floyd as a 70s progressive rock band but they had some awesome psychedelic albums in the late 60s (Piper, Saucerful of Secrets, etc.)
So what, what genres you like determines what you listen to? I must be broke, I like grunge but hate Nirvana, love psychedelic but have a strong distaste for the Beatles, and am quite fond of rap but hate almost all of the crap on MTV these days (but find 90s mainstream rap to be quite alright) But yeah, I would be one of those people that consider Pink Floyd to be more of a 70s band. I mean, Creedence Clearwater Revival would probably be my vote if the '60s' is to be taken loosely; but I definitely normally consider them a 70s band.
the kinks, cream, jimi hendrix experience, canned heat, THE ROLLING STONES, booker T and the MG's, the Who and some northern soul, R&B stuff was awesome around then as well oh yeah, and toots and the maytals are the BANG seriously, no other group ever made a song about getting sent to prison as uplifting as joyous as "54-46 was my number" and the cover of "take me home country roads" is bloody brilliant
Impossible question. I should have to choose between blues rock, psychedelic stuff, folk rock of course and so on. I have no idea what was the overall best band of course. My personal choice would not consider the Beatles at all by the way.
kinks animals stones floyd hendrix-----there all the best of the best and im sure i left a few out---the 60.s ruled for music and i blame all that good acid--Quicksilver messenger service another awesome band---good call
Yeah, in the rock department I'd name Quicksilver and Jimi Hendrix experience as well. I also really like stuff as Fairport Convention and the Pentangle for example, and bluesy stuff like Junior Wells, Charlie Musselwhite, 60's Fleetwood Mac, Canned heat for sure etc, etc. Surf rock, psych pop, boogie, upcoming hard rock. How can you compare the Incredible String band to Steppenwolf for instance...
Ooo, Fairport Convention - great choice!!! I've got to go with the Stones - they've always been able to groove me like no other!
Sly & The Family Stone. They have been an heavy influence on music maybe just as much as the Beatles. Their music was innovative in many ways. Larry Graham changed the role of the bass guitar,Sly fused styles that hadn't been fused much before(Rock,Soul,Funk & Pop). There probably wouldn't have been a Prince without Sly & The Family Stone. Gotta wonder what music today would be like if it wasn't for this band?
totally agreed, i think the addition of syd was what sorta tipped it towards progressive, but they're old stuff like Bike, and The Gnome are great but genre aside im gonna say Zeppelin or the The Dead/Warlocks :cheers2:
Anyone ever here of the mothers... well it was frank zappa's band of the 60's... they were great... wierd but sill great. if you've never heard them check um out
For some reason,I confuse The Mothers with The Fugs.Dont know why.One of these done a album in 66,that McCartney thought was great.Which one ?
