a problem i have with our rather liberal government is the fact that we give so much money overseas for nothing in return. especially to countries that dont like us. Why are we doing this. I guess our country just isnt in debt enough. if someone can give me a logical good explanation to why we give millions of dollars each year to countries that dont like us ill listen.
what i meant by the wealth spreading thing was not that different countries should give each other money, but just socialism within a country. i'm a realist, i realize that a utopian society with no countries isn't going to happen anytime soon. and a completely free market could not work simply because of people's greed. just look at bernie madoff and what happened with him. in a true free market what he did would be perfectly legal. also, when there is no government intervention into the economy, you end up with five or ten people owning everything in the country. just look at what was going on in america in the late 1800s. sure, there were a few very wealthy people, but they were taking advantage of everyone else to make money. there was no minimum wage, no child labor laws, and working conditions were terrible, but there was no alternative for the lower class. i just tend to think that countries should be judged on how they treat their worst off citizens, and capitalism treats the lower class terribly.
It's called being part of humanity. Most countries give less than 0.7 of their GDP to foreign aid. This is peanuts. Think of how much positive work such a small amount of money does. Don't like foreign aid...don't accept it when you need it - yes you guys have recieved it too. Public perceptions reflect support for higher levels of aid. When asked what percentage of the federal budget they think goes to foreign aid, Americans' median estimate is 25% of the budget, more than 25 times the actual level. Only 2% of Americans give a correct estimate of 1% of the budget or less. When asked how much of the budget should go to foreign aid, the median response is 10%. Only 13% of Americans believe that the percentage should be 1% or less. Over 60% of Americans believe that contributing 0.7% of national income to meet the Millennium Development Goals is the right thing to do. http://www.earth.columbia.edu/pages/endofpoverty/oda
Shadow Yet you seem to think all socialist are communists that socialism is incompatible with democracy, and you seem to think the Democrats as socialists, and above all you think that free market capitalism is the best model for a society. That would seem to back up what I’ve been saying about people who come here claiming to be ‘libertarians’ (and not of the right) being basically just right wingers. * I’ve already explained why I think any move toward a free market always moves society in the direction of becoming a plutocratic oligarchy. Free market = plutocratic tyranny. http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/showthread.php?t=353336&f=36 If you have any comments or counter arguments please place them there.
i understand what ur saying but thats because of the constitution. the constitution does not grant the government the power to get involved in business therefore giving us a free market society. the government blatantly ignores the constitution time and again so they just get invoved. its not that we are right wingers, its just that the right wing happens to believe in something constitutional for a change.
did i ever say i want aid? i dont thing i get that much aid from my own government. im not on welfare, im too young for social security so it will probably be gone by the time im old enough to collect anyways. i will have paid in with nothing in return. (this is speculation with good evidence) as for other countries, just because they are poor doesnt give them the right to leech of more wealthy countries. the citizens always have anohter option if they want to make money besides what they are doing. lastly while the US may get some foreign aid (although im not sure thats true) it is certainly minimal at best. usually when the US needs money we borrow some from other countries such as England. England recently denied the US the ability to borrow money so that may not even be true in the future.
Shadow The views you have expressing are right wing and based on right wing principles, ideas and ideals, what left wing views have you got that are based on left wing principles and ideals? * As to the US Constitution its not some sacred text set down by gods – it a political document that was forged out of political compromise and intrigue, and was build to safeguard the interests of the wealthy squire class. In my opinion it is well overdue for a re-write.
You'd be surprised. It may not be 'utopian' but I have a hunch nationstates as we know them will not be around forever. Perhaps their demise will occur before the end of this century. We don't live in the 1800s anymore. There really is no reason to believe that market forces would play out the same way today that they did 100 years ago. The world is so different now, and changing at a much faster rate. Minimum wage puts Americans out of jobs when immigrants are willing to work for less than it. If the working class ever actually united, they would be able to change their conditions within a capitalist framework. They have the power. The only difference is they'd be dealing directly with the bosses and not be using the government as a middle man.
Keeping foot in door. Keeping the masses thinking we are the good guys. So many people EXPECT us to "give", regardless, because after all, we are AMERICANS and that's what America does... so we must keep up appearances. PLUS many times, the "country" doesn't like "us" but the LEADERS of those countries are working hand in hand behind the scenes.

the Constitution is what makes our country America. if u want it rewritten go do it the right way. if u do that i have no problem. dont ignore what is already there. why if we ignore the constitution as it is should we follow your "rewritten" constitution?
first off minimum wage destroys jobs. it doesnt help people. minimum wage also drives prices up. people cant afford the new cost of products (especially those who are now unemployed.) the businesses must raise their prices so that they can deal with the new expenses they are paying. the government is not helping us in this situation. when the unhappy deal with their problems without the government's "help" they get what they want. If the people cant seem to get the job done then it must not be important enough to unite enough workers. if its not that important then we dont need the government to do the job anyways. Secondly why is capitalism so much different now than it was then. its the same idea. it still works the same way. so we have big businesses. they can be dealt with just like any small business. if the workers are unhappy they will fight back. if the people dont like the prices the consumers find someone else to buy from. if the consumers and the workers are happy then the company will continue to grow. Third, as far as why we giving money to other countries so we can be there friends is absurd. if they want to have peaceful relations with the US then we shouldnt have to pay for that. After all what if we dont pay? are they going to go to war with us? obviously not since they dont have the funds if were giving them all our money. if u dont want to have peaceful relations with us. OK well mind our own business but if u want to start a fight then ok. well fight back. the fact that we need to pay money for peace is rediculous. what if we said to England, give us money or we wont be peaceful with u anymore. it would look stupid and thats how it looks to me when we give money to other countries. Lastly, somebody asked what my "liberal" views are. i dont believe i have any liberal views as i feel i im in the middle like a centralist libertarian. as far as non right wing beliefs however. i believe in a true 2nd amendment as opposed to the fake one we follow now. The second amendment wouldnt allow for the restriction of any weapons. that would mean yes i can own any weapon i want. "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." there it is. The PEOPLE have the right to own arms (weapons of any kind) shall not be infringed. infringed mean To encroach on someone or something; engage in trespassing. this translates to the right of the people to own weapons shall not be encroached upon. so any law which restricts the right to own weapons is illegal. thats it. as far a the well regulated millitia part, that protects our right to form millitias to fight back should the people find the need.
Agreed. It's different because life was vastly different back then. We live in a different time now, a different world. Capitalism is by definition and by design a very malleable system. It is run by the whims of the consumer, which are subject to much variation across space and time.
ok so we agree on something. thats nice. i also wont deny that it is based on the "whims" of the consumers. the idea however that the consumers have the power is the very essence of capitallism. it is what drives businesses to do what is right. some things will never change about the consumers. consumers will always want the best product at the best price. so companies are always forced to be efficient to keep costs down. those that are good will survive. those that cant survivie go out of business. currently American companies can not compete with foreign companies because of stupid ideas such as minimum wage. the companies cant keep costs lower than foreign competitors do to labor (prime example is the Auto industry). if the government didnt get involved and didnt create a minimum wage we wouldnt have this issue. also in general the american companies make an inferior product. Why? well if they dont the government will bail them out. or atleast for a while as the companies are finding out now. i would also like to know ur opinion about my third and fourth points in my last post
