Hey everyone, I was thinking it might be cool to have a thread with just little random tips that people have picked up that weren't apparent to them when they first started their dreadlocks. Here are two of my tips to help deal with loose hair!! 1) Hats..... they are beneficial, but often uncomfortable to wear in your sleep. If like me you hate wearing a hat, at least wear a BANDANA while you sleep, so that you don't run your fingers through your hair, and especially after rolling your dreads so that when you toss and turn all your hard work doesn't goto waste. It took me a long time to realize this. The way I tie it is fold it over into a triangle and then tie the tips underneath your back dreads with the triangle pointing towards the back of your neck. Maybe it's because i never got a proper large rasta hat , but I also always thought that my wool hat didn't help me much, although it was tight on my head. 2) Twist and rip for loose hair. Trying to go mostly natural? Lots of loose hair especially in certain sections? My hair is very straight, so in order for it to get caught in dreads next to it, I need to make it curly-ish. What you do is take a segment of hair, and twist it, then take the tip and rip it pushing the twists towards your scull. Then take the knot that forms, and push it up with your fingers towards the roots, repeat several times until you get a mini looking dread. Roll together, and try not to play with it. If your hair is naturally curly this might not help much. Twist and rip works with loose tips to some extent, but not any better then rolling the hair into your palm.
ummm wearr5ing a hat destroys all the (useless) hard work of palm rolling palm rolling is a total waste of time but wearring a hat to bed flattens the dreads (somewhat..however flattening from varios angles roubds them as well..just saying that after u palm roll and waste all that tine wearring a hat will flatten them again, untill u readjust the hat so theyre flattened from the sides making them roundser again..point is u might as well skip the palm rolling and just wear a hat..although why at night wear it duyring the day and let your pillow round em at night) tip 2 loose hairs leave em alone evcentualy they will become baby dreads
I've come to accept that palm rolling your dreads is almost the same thing as combing your hair(for those of us that are dreadless). I agree that it doesn't do anything in the long term, but if you are going out and want to look nice, have your dreads look more even, palm rolling is a great way to do it, just like combing your hair gets the knots out and whatnot, but it doesn't leave any long term results, that just takes time. I've never owned a loose wool hat, but wearing my wool beanie to sleep would make all the excess hair go everywhere again. Once again, i agree that this will happen. Twist and rip is just a way of speeding it up. However, only once when I did it was there a baby dread instantly, most of the time it helps just a little.
do i read often? Not so much anymore, but without soaring eagle and this board i would've probably gone and bought a dread kit and done it exactly as they say on one of those websites, or gone to a salon to start my dreads.
