What do you do when you want to be a writer, but all you constantly hear from your parents is how little money they make and how little luck you'll have? They're wonderful, but I feel like I can't follow my dream. Please counsel me!
you can do what i did, and learn to accept a possible life of extremely poor income and lack of financial or other types of support. The life of a writer can be extremely difficult, but if you are strong enough and have the will for it, it can be incredibly rewarding. If you can handle it, go for it.
It doesn't hurt to have a plan B. Some writers with 5-6 midlist novels still work another job part time.
Then prove your parents wrong. Assign yourself a few projects that end with a self-printed product. Encourage them to read it. Let them see that you're serious. Challenge yourself to do more than write in a journal or visit online boards like this. And brag a bit when you've accomplished something.
If writing is your dream then go ahead... Who can stop you? Your parents are right, don't be mad with them, you must know the risks. you love writing but you need to feed, so get a job and write at the same time! If you're talented and if this is really ur dream, don't give up In fact, I think that writing shouldn't even be considered a job. Good Luck!!!
i refuse to give up. i continue to write to to grow as a writer, but writing is not all i do or want to do. i don't believe that you can be a good writer without actually living.
I say do what you want. Personally, I'd rather be poor doing something I love than be rich doing something that's boring or I just plain hate.
LOL totally agree with Trippin My lectuer told me there are three kinds of writers.... Those who write for fame and glory Those who write for the illusion of being intellectual/bohemian Those who write because they have to, it's a borderline mental illness, and if the words don't come out their brain will explode! People in the third category don't really care about all the extra bits like money and fame. Sure some would be good, but it's not the whole deal. I haven't made a penny from writing thus far (it's been nearly ten years) if I wasn't into it then I'd have given up by now.
