Here's the latest in Christian love and charity from the man who blames Pagans and gays for the 9/11 attacks! Get your barfbags ready before reading this one! http://www.baptiststandard.com/postnuke/index.php?module=htmlpages&func=display&pid=2518
As I said in another thread, this is merely further demonstrable proof of the nature of our own US cult of death that hides behind a pretense of Christianity. Hatemongers the lot of them.
"Jerry Falwell apparently believes the United States is waging holy war in Iraq," said Stan Hastey, executive director of the Alliance of Baptists. "Such comments are fodder for the terrorists, bulletin board material for Osama bin Laden in recruiting his own holy warriors. What spews out of Jerry Falwell's mouth is increasingly toxic. He would do well to re-read Jesus' beatitudes and reorder both his rhetoric and priorities accordingly." I wish more would pay attention to those wise words...
Wars are never justified, especially in the name of "God", which is clearly a deeply stupid remark as muslims and christians believe in the same god, but just from another culturally dependable perspective.
I would think we can expect more of these kind of statements with these christian right people feeling their oats after the election. It seems that theuy are fueling the fire by creating the holy war, when it really doesn't have to be related to religion on this end at all.
it's actually refreshing to see so many christians getting offended by his statement. from the point of view of a non-christian, it seems that the fruitcake extremists like falwell have the loudest voice and drown out the saner ones, making it look like that is what the religion is about. people of a different faith, like me, or with no faith, or who are seeking faith, see that and can easily forget that that is not what the religion is really like. unfortunately, a lot of christians seem to have forgotten that, too.
it disturbs me how much religion is getting dragged into this, and politics in general. it bothers me that voters are more concerned with dictating who may and may not make a legally binding commitment to each other based on gender than they are about the deaths of over a thousand american troops and countless iraqis, over a blatant, manipulative lie. it also bothers me how, for so many people who have a religion, politics and dogma seem more important than spirituality and goodness. matt, i just tried to PM you again.
The "christians" can claim to be outraged, but since the vast majority of those who voted for Bush claim to BE "christians," their outrage doesn't go far. I personally don't know why anyone would be shocked by these kind of statements - the president himself has been bleating about how he's been "chosen by god" and told an Arab prince that he had to invade Iraq because god told him to - so Falwell was just following his lead. People don't get it - these nutcases really see this as good vs. evil - with america as the "good" - ignoring that america has its hand in a massive amount of the EVIL going on, but they are so blind and sick, they can't see that.
"Turkey instead used just peacemaking practices with its Muslim terrorists among the Kurds, and the Kurdish terrorism is completely ended," Stassen said. "They are not killing 'here' or 'there.'" Ellis D. Tripp I enjoyed your post immensely, but must post my perspective on Turkey is quite different. Ever since the UK and the US portioned Kurdistan's territory out to its neighbours after WWI, all of them have done a great deal to get rid of these people. Turkey has pushed them off of their traditional lands into subsistence level conditions. They have forcibly crushed any opposition, and imprisoned the leaders of the Turkish Kurds for years without trial. That is what I have read at least. Any more input or correction would be very welcome.
Great points. I agree, and am just as bothered by it. The dogma is more important than the people. I am for the people, the present time, and peace. Love must be the main impetus. The texts are great, but real people's lives right now are far more important. PT Barnum once said you can never underestimate the intelligence of the general public. As I age, this seems more true every day.
I would say Falwell is a very shrewd, greedy, intelligent, sociopath. No ethics at all, no conscience. Evil is not too strong a term for his actions and words. His followers, to me, for the most part, are desperate, lonely, and gullible, and he fleeces them royally with a big smile on his face. Televangelists are right near the top of my list of most despicable people, with the very rare exception. The elderly widows and such they prey on, are just victims, too distraught and confused to see the wolf in sheeps clothing.
ooo...a good ol' religious war. Nothin better than trying to wipe out everyone that looks at your god funny. There was a religion upon which alot of christianity was originally based. It's followers were called Zoroestrians. (I might be spelling that wrong). Every single last one was hunted down and massacred for their god. "History may not repeat itself but it rhymes"- Mark Twain
I love it, the Twain quote especially. Some say that Zoroaster was the original monotheist. His followers are just one of many groups slaughtered by the Christian soldiers of western Europe, along with Jews, Cathars, Orthodox Christians, Muslims, and many more.
It really irks me to see so called Christians like Falwell give the rest of us Christians a bad rap.Not all Christians are warmongering, homophobic, racebaiters like Falwell. I voted for Kerry and I've been opposed to the Iraq war from day one. Jesus warned us about people like Falwell. Not all Christians and Christian Pastors are like Falwell. My dad is a Seventh-day Adventist Pastor and is an anti-war,prochoice Democrat. Please don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. I have no problem with religeon, its the churches I have a problem with. -Mark Twain
quote: It really irks me to see so called Christians like Falwell give the rest of us Christians a bad rap. Glad to hear you say that, I would like to see level headed, more mainstream christians take back their religion from bible literalists and religious extremists. I would also like to see more moderate republicans take back their party.
the zoroastrians weren't completely wiped out; you may be confusing the with the cult of mythras. there are still about 140,000 zoroastrians in the world today, mostly concentrated in india, where their ancestors fled from muslim persecution. a few remain in what is now iran, and there are over 3,000 zorastrians in canada. i don't have the numbers for the states, but we're such a religiously diverse nation in spite of the vocal fundamentalist weirdoes that there are bound to be a few here, too. it was in fact the first monotheistic religion, and is probably actually responsible for the good/evil split in consciousness that i believe is causing so much harm in mainstream religion today. zorastrianism also gives us the concept of demons, angels, and heaven and hell. i'm not sure but i believe the stars and planets are also of great importance. zorastrianism is the oldest of the world religions. christianity in its infancy was a much persecuted and misunderstood faith, and much of its early development happened in secret. because it was an urban, underground "fringe" religion, it borrowed a great deal from other faiths, including zorastrianism, mythraism, and the ancient state religions of egypt and rome. it wasn't until some roman emperor converted and began to apply his own power-lust to the faith that they went all nutty and intolerant and began to kill off the very religions they grew out of. find out more about zoroastrianism here: http://www.religioustolerance.org/zoroastr.htm
I made this picture. I know it's violent as all hell but I think it reflects a segment of our population that is definitely motivated by their own fear based belief system. The thought that many of these folk do indeed own guns has crossed my mind more than once.
