I'm currently a freshman in college and just got fired from my bakery job. Now I have my dad on my back every day about getting a job. Anyone have any advice on decent paying entry level jobs that I could work full time at, along side school, so I could afford to finally move out (8.50/hr +)? I haven't smoked in the past month so I can pass a prescreen. After that though I'd like to start back up. :sifone: I've worked several jobs in customer service, food, and a private investigative office. I'd like to stay away from the food industry if I can. Just turned vegan and I feel I can't ignore that fact that I am helping these wasteful companies stay in business by working for them. But I guess there are plenty of wasteful industries out there, and nonetheless we work for them anyways. I mainly just wouldn't want to cook or work in fast food. Any first hand experience would be helpful, especially from former full time students or current college students. I'm not too worried about working and going to school full time, the more I do the less bored and lazy I become. Thanks for any help!
If you live near where you go to college I would say try and find a job working at your school. Every college I've ever known is more than happy to hire students to work around campus & are flexible w/ your schedule since they obviously know you're a student. So if your college has a Rec Center or something thats a pretty easy job. That is one thing that sux w/ college is that a lot of places won't hire you b/c they know you'll be either gone in a few months, or when you're taking classes you have limited workable hours. If there's a mall near your college that's another place you could try. I know a ton of college people who worked at the mall by our school.
Oh and pick up a newspaper if you don't get one & just cruise through the classifieds. Alot of times they have jobs that are specific to college kids.
here's some first hand experience. you can try retail, customer service, temp agencies, landscaping, babysitting, housekeeping, seasonal jobs, etc.. but be willing to feel like you're selling your soul to get out of your situation. i feel ya man, i was vegan for years, am pretty anti-corporate, human/animal rights supporter, "environmentalist," etc and sometimes you just have to do it. you do what it takes. you probably can't really afford to be picky right now. i tried that at first and it didn't work. i've had my own place right out of high school and had to move back home after 2 years, then back again this year because of losing my job. i sucked it up and have a job in line at pizza hut. am i thrilled to start working at a place that's responsible for so much destruction and suffering? uh no. but my part in it is so small and this job is better than no job. and i'm keeping in mind what this represents in the big picture - my ticket to being out on my own again and starting massage therapy school. that will be my "career" and will matter more in the long run than some job i have during school. you won't be stuck in this forever. so just consider all the possibilities so you can work asap and be free. sorry this was long best wisheseace:
I don't get the whole anti-corporate.. just because one big business is bad doesn't mean they all are... one for example Fastenal.. the head CEO and Founder of Fastenal Bob Keirlin(sp?) is totally pro-marijuana... here in town.. he wanted to build a bridge over the train tracks to get trucks out faster.. it involved plowing into a little bit of wet land.. not even an acres worth.. in return.. they helped rebuild a 100acres of wet land preserve
well when i say corporate i mean like humungo corporate corporate makes up most of our consumer needs..
IBM/3M/Microsoft all put money into preserving wet lands and natural enviroment... and try to tell me that any of these are not "humungo" corps
corporations do good. i am not arguing against that at all. maybe i should've said "pro small/local" instead of "pretty anti-corporate," i don't know.
Thanks everyone for the advice. I am just going to have to suck it up and work somewhere. But one thing I do too often is become very frustrated with a job and end up quitting for something else. Although ever job I have gotten since my first I have been keeping a little bit longer. Maybe in a few years I can actually make it over a year! I don't have an issue with all corporations. I mainly have an issue with the underlying system that they are based in. From a vegan perspective, this obviously means most food industry companies. I am not anti-capitalist, I would actually support a real laissez faire Capitalistic society if our citizens had a better head on their shoulders. Current multinational corporations I believe generally are doing much more damage than good. This relates to conditions for workers outside of the US and within, waste, greed, and feeding useless materialistic shit to those who want it. It is ridiculous to think that most corporations actually give a damn about their employees, especially in the market we currently are in now. I don't really have an issue with educational services, the information industry, wholesale and some service themed companies) If you want an example of positive corporations, look at how Japan was able to rebuild itself after WWII. They took a radically different approach to corporation dynamics ie teamwork, long term goals, respect, etc. It was not until recently that they disbanded this for a more western approach.
