the answer is always in the boxes which are multiples of 9 (not sure if multiples is the correct term).

when you subtract the individual numbers from any 2 digit number and then add the individual numbers of the resulting number you get nine.

 

LOL, and the solution or proof of why it works is extremely simple, requires nothing but high school algebra (more specifically, algebraic analysis).

No matter what two digit number you pick once you do their required math you will end up with a number divisible by 9. Each number on that grid which is divisible by 9 is the same item, THEREFORE (hope that's proof-ish sounding enough for you) explaining why they guess your item every time. Duh??!!?!?

its a lot easier to see why it works using albegra:

Check it, any 2-digit number can be written as n=10a+b. So their example, 25, would be 25=10(2)+5.

So the trick is when they tell you to subtract a and b from n, you get

n-a-b = 10a+b-a-b = (10a-a)+(b-b) = 9a

so yeah, when you get any number of the form 10a+b, and you subtract (a+b) you will end up with a multiple of 9. and in the grid, 9, 18, 27, 36, 45.. are all the same thing, giving it a 100% accuracy rate.

 

I love the number 9. the other day I figure out some cool shit, it was really awesome because I did it on my own.
but 9 multiplied by 2, 3, 4, etc., will give you the answers 18, 27, 36, and so on. well, if you reverse those digits, you get 81, 72, 63, which are the answers to 9 multiplied by 9, 8, and 7. it works fully.
and if you didn't notice, all those numbers will add to 9. for example, 81 adds to 9 because 8 + 1 = 9.
