I guess I post this in here. (Wasn't sure where else to post it). I want to paint my car with my own unique design. The car was a gift from my mother after her passing. It is a Hyundai Getz -white. I want to make it more interesting. Put my own personal touch on it. When I google "car art" (how to) or "painting your car" all I get is info on adhesive designs or re-spraying it (all one colour after patching up rust). Was wondering what preparation the car needs. I won't be using spray paint, I would prefer a creative design involving a paint brush. The car will be my canvas. What kind of paint can I use????? Exterior house paint? or does it need to be something for use on metal? I don't plan on stripping the existing paint off, just painting over it. I have re-sprayed a car about 11 years ago. A former boyfriend was given an old ford XD. We had to patch up rust and re-paint it (using spray on paint). Nothing artistic or creative.
well i dont know much about cars.. but im sure youl have to get proper paint for metal... a good quality paint.. otherwise the paint will start to bubble and peel off
i've been thinking about doing my car in the way i paint. similar to keith harings work. he painted his bmw, google it that shit is cool. but i think you could just get car paint somewhere and brush it on carefully. but idk a thing about cars, i swear i'll do it tho!
I know nothing about cars.. especially painting them! But I think this is a pretty neat idea.. Maybe ask people who decorate those cool buses or VWs?
the only way you could get anything real intricate is to airbrush for one thing - which requires a lot of expensive ass paint and equipment. not to mention if you paint over your existing clear coat and color paint, whatever kind of paint you DO choose (no matter the quality) will just end up fading and looking like shit. you have to prep my grinding down to bare steel to repaint a car. if not you will also risk getting crazy damage to the actual body over time, as well. you absolutely must have an airbrush, too. no paintbrush will have the cover a can or an airbrush. rattlecan will look better under a DIY clearcoat (airbrushed ONLY) than paint brush and clearcoat, too... so this is a lot more expensive than i think you are wishing...hiring someone is also an option, or just paint it yourself with a spray can no prep work and watch your car get eaten by rust
BlueWaters you want to use an enamel type paint, which you can buy at most any store that sells that kind of stuff. it'll hold up better, through better adhesion, if the base is dirt, wax and grease free. this can be done with a number of different things like acetone or methyl ethyl ketone (MEK). both of these are fairly toxic and need to be used with great respect. also they flash off quickly and leave no residue so it won't mess up your top coat or art. just wipe down the area you'll be painting with a lint-free cloth soaked in one of the two mentioned. be sure to wear some heavyish gloves to protect your hands. of course you can skip that step and just wash and dry it well but it won't hold up as long. a clear coat over top of your work will also help it last. be sure to post some pictures when you're done. art cars are sweet! good luck.
I had painted my old car with a swirly green brown and blue mixture ... It was an old beater, so I didnt bother prepping it or anything. I just took some old acrylic paints and went to town with my best friend, haha ... It ended up lasting about 2 or 3 years until I had to junk the car. I wish I still had some pictures of it, it was really gnarly.
