ive read many books and publications by gurus, new age people, "enlightened people", and eastern mystics. maybe its because i have always been so curious about the true nature of things. or maybe because im desperately searching for something missing from my life, for answer to all the crap i go through. reading the words of people who claim the answer to their problems is meditation has been an addiction for years.

the words of these authors is enticing. they all basically say the same things, about the mind being fake and only an obstacle, bla bla bla. and it seems to make logical sense. but could this all be a sham? could people like me who are searching so hard for an answer be drawn into this philosophy and fool themselves into thinking it is genuine because they want it to be so? the peace and happiness they might be feeling only a mere placebo effect?

believe me, i WANT it to be true. but its getting hard to believe it. it never ever works for me. i try and try. for years now, i go through phases where i try to meditate every day, just to wind up loosing the routine and not trying again for months. its hard to tell if i feel any different during the phases where i meditate. maybe vaguely different, but its real hard to tell, yknow? and this effect might be psychological, too. maybe the benefits only come in the long term, and i need more discipline so i can meditate every day. maybe, maybe, maybe. i try to meditate and i only wind up thinking as much as i do when im walking or talking to someone.

PROVE to me that it works!

ive had the same doubts, but have continued to meditate everyday for about 2hrs. I find that if you continue without expectation you will meditate much better if thats the right word. I've experienced many things which cannot be put down to a placebo effect. You really need the correct mindset and heart for meditation to be effective.

the mind is a very powerful, yet very elusive and unknown thing. you can definitly do things with meditation, but there is no way to know for sure until you try it yourself. all i can give you is my word

dont think of it as a scam, besides, if you want to try meditation and want information about it seek info online, ever try looking in this forum. dont spend money to find out about something that is so non-substanstial, but try it anyways.

Maybe your environment isn't very good??

Yoga really helped me understand and experience meditaiton in the beginning. Also seek out many different teachers, and use what works for you, in whatever moment you find yourself.

You need a technique and support group. You can't just sit and hope to accomplish anything.

I used to every day, sit down and meditate and I had some sucess. But I've stopped because I've found a far better way to meditate, and that's to play guitar. It's different for everyone, I'd be amazed to meet someone who actively do the same.

Meditation is a mindset, and you can achieve this mindset in any way. Walking meditation, sitting meditation, lead guitar meditation, writing medition.

It all achieves the same goal.

I suggest you don't worry about it to much and just find something you love and pour your energy into it, that will be meditation enough.

    Blessings

You will find no truth through meditation. You will not become enlightened through meditation. There is absolutely religious or mystical connotation in meditation.

This is not to say that meditation has no benefits, or is something made up. When a person who has practices meditation techniques for a long time meditates all he or she is doing is shutting down most of the brain. Meditation occurs when your brain functions slow from the normal, awake phase, Beta, through the Alpha phase, where you become aware of your body, to the Theta phase, where deep meditation is found. There is nothing mystical about it, every one of us goes through the meditative state (or Theta phase) before we fall asleep. The practice of meditation keeps you in the Theta stage.

These stages that lead to sleep are natural body reactions to the stress of everyday life. Practicing meditation is utilizing your body’s natural stress reliever.

15 – 20 minutes a day will yield stress relief, but no real deep meditation. If you are doing it for anything other than stress relief you are going to be bitterly disappointed.

If you practice meditation techniques long enough (for hours a day for years at a time) you may gain control enough to reach and prolong the theta stage of brain functioning. This is where all the buddhist monks, as well as catholic nuns, and anyone who claims to have ‘oneness with the world’ is going when they meditate.

It must be fun because they say that when you get there you are no longer aware of your body. If you are, they say, there is no connection and limbs are floating near you rather than attached to you. Basically you are all mind.

Meditation = stress relief. Meditation does not = the way to truth.

I am not sure I agree OSF

Meditation unlocks kundalini if practiced long enough and this is mystical.

i try to do active meditation. don't know if that's the correct term, but i basically try to always maintain that state of mind throughout the day. i look at it as a battle-every time i'm aware of when my mind begins to clutter with useless anylizations and descriptions, i try to clear it out. i've only been doing this for a short time, and have a lifetime to go, but i have already noticed very real pros to using it. my eyesight and hearing have improved, my relationships are more meaningful, and i worry alot less. good luck and don't give up.

I agree with Michael, for the most part.

A regular yoga routine can help center your life(...so I've heard.heh.)
...but my whole saving grace when facing all the SHIT present in this
'snilivized', brutish reality has come from experiences from chemical and spiritual practices. In fact I find the first rather distracting and useless without the latter. Light disassociative use and Kundalini meditation has positively erased the drab paper walls of routine that obscure something SO much bigger. and somehow more real...it's almost like... going home...(sigh)...
Plus, I can impress the chicks with the ultra sexy yoga pose where I can fuck and lick her at the same time!!![IMG] ahhhh...good times....
    lol
