This was a top story in the local newspaper yesterday:

Whispers of Phish: Will the band return to Hampton Coliseum before year's end?

Whispers circulating locally and nationally suggest that jam band kings Phish may return to Hampton Coliseum before year's end.

A Hampton city government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Phish is definitely coming back this year — probably sometime in the fall.

To be perfectly clear, that whispering official is not Joe Tsao, director of the Hampton Coliseum.

"I don't know anything about it, but I'd love to do the show," Tsao said this week. "If it's going to happen, they need to call me."

The band's official Web site shows a late summer tour ending in mid-August and a three-day festival happening in an as-yet undisclosed location Oct. 30-Nov. 1.

Newport News Phish fanatic Adam Bollinger said he has been hearing the rumors of another Hampton date for weeks.

"I heard late November or early December, maybe even early next year," he said. "I heard it earlier from a friend whose husband is a Hampton police officer. But nothing official. There's always rumors."

Bollinger started to take the rumors more seriously when an Internet message board devoted to Phish reported a Nov. 12 date.

But any return to Hampton would be cause for celebration, he said.

"I'd be stoked regardless," Bollinger said.

When Phish chose to reunite and end its long absence from the concert stage at Hampton Coliseum March 6-9, the event drew national rock music media and created a boon for local businesses. The Hampton Convention & Tourism Bureau estimated that the three sold-out concerts created an economic impact of $7 million.

Law enforcement also had its hands full. The shows resulted in 194 arrests on various misdemeanor and felony offenses, mostly possessing, using and selling drugs. Some people faced multiple counts, bringing the total number of charges to 254.

The band and its promoters paid for traffic management and security, Hampton city officials have said.

Yeah. It seems like Hampton is out for the Halloween show. I'm anxious to know where it's going to.

Let's just hope there's no ticket fiasco this time around.
