Dr Strangeglove and Full metal Jacket are the only good Kubrick films fave characters Group Captain (G/C) Lionel Mandrake Brig. Gen. Jack D. Ripper http://www.kubrick2001.com/2001.html mmm intresting but its stil crap.
Peter Sellers and Stanley Kubrik are two artists who will stay in history. Their perception, humor and style are something that today's moviemakers consider anathema, their only concern being a profitable production. All essence of a moral lesson in today's world has been subsidised by selling us consumer products. Strangely, Dr.Strangelove managed to shed some much needed humor to all the people who, at the time (the Cold War), were living in constant fear of a nuclear holocaust. The same kind of fear that George W. Bush is springing on folks today, so that they'll send their children off to fight his private war. Hmm...I am diverging a bit. My point is MORE films like this should be made, rather than the 90 minute commercials they have the nerve to call movies.
Through it's rare any films as good as Dr Strangelove come out anymore. It's all OTT hollywood bollocks
2001 was a masterpiece for it's time, it was a full on audiovisual experince, the sequence with Johann Strass's Blue Danude playing near the start is fucking amazing.
Dr. Strangelove is a great movie! I watched for the second time in a Film class I had last semester. It was an interesting one to pick apart. I have never seen 2001: A Space Odyssey. I will have to check it out.
Make sure when you see 2001 that you see it in darkness. Don't try and make too much sense of the movie. Like the universe, it contains unsolved mysteries. Just sit back, relax and let the images filter through. By the way, a bit of movie trivia for all those who don't know: if you take the letters HAL (the artificial intelligence computer on board the spaceship) and change each one of them for the next letter in the alphabet, can you see what it spells? Smart man that Kubrik (bear in mind when this movie was made)!
Clever, I never noticed that before. Great move. Very funny. It's been a while since I've seen it though. Reading these posts makes me want to watch it again.
"they" say the IBM thing was a coincidence.. yeah right. There is a discussion of this in another thread. several people said is was slow and plodding, guess they miss the Star Wars zoom whoosh boom bang. 2001, is too close to "real world" physics .. ie: no sound in space, it takes time .. a long time to get from point A to point B. oops .. sorry ** off the soap box now ** I think Kubrik is in a class with Kurosawa.
