Hi, I bought a Western Digital WD6400 hard drive to use for storage, and got my flatmate to help me install it (As I have no experience with this sort of thing) I'm able to store and use stuff on it fine, however when I turn my computer on something goes wrong and I'm unable to access anything on it, and it says its not formatted. Under computer management it seems to have copied my C Drive If I use data recovery software like diskdigger I'm able to see and copy some of the files, so I'm not too concerned about lost data (Although it would be a great relief if it could be saved) Ive tried playing with a program called TestDisk that is supposed to help but have had no success in fixing it, or even knowing what the cause is. So any help would be greatly appreciated.
you need to partition it, take your windows xp cd, and partition it. OR "delete this drive" and "format" it's unallocated because it's not part of a partition.
I have done that, and everytime I start it up again that partition disappears and i'm left with whats happened in the screenshot. Then if I try to access the drive it says its not formatted.
yer friend did it wrong. Don't just format. Format only prepares a partition that is already there. Make sure you delete any partitions you have, then create a new partition that is the largest size possible (should be about 600Gb). After that, reinstall windows.
