Do you smell your food before you buy it? I smell my fruits and veggies. Especially potatos, it's cheaper to buy them by the bag so I smell them to make sure there isn't a rotted one in the bag. There was a comment in the local newspaper recently about this....so, I'm curious. Who else smells their food?
Do I smell my produce? I do sometimes. But I'm most particular about how my fruits and veggies appear and feel...for instance, I will only buy fresh brocolli when the flowers are nice and tight. That's when it's at it's peak freshness. Otherwise, I think it tastes like crap in my opinion. Celery must be a nice deep green, no pale stalks. Romaine or green leaf lettuce, deep green, not a speck of dark on the tips. Potatoes, I check through the bag to make sure they look good, any rotten ones, even just one, and I won't buy the bag. Watermelon, a deep pink, no paleness, but not overly dark, as that means it's going bad. Strawberries, fire engine red, not even the slighest bit of dark red, I hate how they taste once they start to turn darker. Peppers, no paleness, no soft spots, rich color, heavy in the hand. I'm always checking for bruising on fruits/veggies. I mean, why waste your money?
Oh, good. I thought I was alone. I check for ALL of that. Lol. It takes me forever to get through the produce section.
Me too! It's actually the part of grocery shopping that I most dread because it takes me so dang long. The rest is easy.
I pull most out of my garden so I do not have to worry about freshness Homegrown is the only way to go
I'm beginning to see that. It's been great to go out and my garden and pick out some fresh lettuce for my sandwiches, grab a chili pepper to put on a homemade pizza, pick a ucchini to stir fry,
nothing we buy at the grocery store smells..lol well flour does have a smell, but no we dont smell it..lol
oh I smell everything! not really when buying groceries simply because.. I haven't had the occasion to buy that many groceries, not having my own kitchen! but that shall change in just about a month - but I smell everything I'm about to eat, before putting it in my mouth, like an animal.. though.. I technically am, an animal.. but anyways..
I like fresh veggies and fruits too, but right now, I just don't have that option. Our gardens just didn't turn out. We've got some tomatos and beans, other than that, everything just didn't....like us, I don't suppose. I'm still hoping for some potatos, but so far, they aren't ready.
I don't really smell or anything unless I'm at the farmer's market, where I usually get to sample stuff anyway. I do, however, check ingredient lists for up to two hours at trips to the grocery store.

We don't have a big enough fridge to get too many fresh veggies, and usually the only fresh veggies we get are baby carrots which are bagged already and potatoes. I pay attention to the smells of the potatoes after I got a bag with three rotten ones. I don't get right down there and sniff. But certain things you have to smell to see if they're good, like a lot of fruits. Peaches, apricots, cantaloupe...I don't think you're weird, moon, but I am weird, because I like to sniff all those things even though I never buy them. Haha. I squeeze apples and oranges, though, to see if they're okay. My apples cannot be mealy or mushy or bruised. I haaaate mealy apples.
