Do you think she should not have been picked for that job?-- For those that do not know, the Surgeon General is a position in the US governement that oversees a number of health issues. The new one happens to be a lady that must be close to 300 pounds in weight, seems about 5 feet 4 inches tall, and to add certainly not the picture of health. For all I know she may be very qualified, maybe not. Please note :I am not putting overweight people down.I'm just asking your opinions.
"do as i say not as i do." as long as she knows what she's talking about, i figure it shouldn't really matter. it's not like people are going to go out and overeat just because the surgeon general's a fattie.
I agree as long as she is qualified, that is the main thing. However, on the other hand-- just as an example or two, I don't think many people would read or buy a book on fitness if it were written by someone that looks like Oprah Winfrey or Rush Limbaugh.I don't think many people would follow a diet recommended by someone that looks like Rosanne Barr etc. etc.
If she doesn't care about her own health, why would she care about anyone elses? Is living by example not the best way to teach?
How can you be qualified if you obviously can't follow your own advice, though? Considering the obesity issue in this country, I think someone healthy should've been put in that office.
Also it's not that she is over-weight, she is very, very obese. Retired surgeon general C. Everett Coop who is in his early 90s in age looks alot healthier than her. This lady is in her 50s.
the surgeon general has more on her plate (haha) than diet and obesity. Overseeing, managing, and preparing for a public health emergency, like a virus or something and preparing health warnings. Advising lifestyle choices is merely an informal duty.
she could be a genius who has done twice the research anyone else has on the subject and just has poor self control. or maybe she has a glandular problem causing her obesity. i know nothing about the woman so i'm really not trying to defend her here; i just don't think how someone lives their personal life necessarily effects how they do their job. it's not like she's an aerobics instructor; she basically just gives advice. leading by example is nice, but i really doubt anyone in america is going to make themselves fat just because the surgeon general is. likewise if she was skinny.
I've always had somewhat of an issue with this kind of hypocrisy. Like coaches who need their student athletes to take care of their bodies and study hard in order to have a successful program, yet can't keep their own weight under 4-hundo. When I thought I might want to be a Nutritionist / Personal Trainer I knew I'd need to be healthy and look good in order to feel justified in advising people on these topics. That said, pragmatically it really should mostly be about the knowledge and know-how, different people need certain things to satisfy their happiness. The same genes that might make her enjoy desserts more than anything else on the planet might make her the best person to piece together all the information required to make the masses healthy.
No, because she's just testing. She is delving that deep into seeing what it's like to be overweight, to greater understand the problem.
Idk... http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/about/duties/index.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regina_Benjamin Quote from an opinion piece in msnbc... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/31928335/ns/health-health_care/
i don't really care it doesn't affect me none that she is obese. and if people need to look to others such as the surgeon general for that sort of advice...then my only piece of advice for them is to learn some damn personal responsibility
I can remember when doctors actually smoked cigs while they talked to patients and had ashtrays all up in there.Seems really weird now.It made me wonder if they knew what the hell they were talking about.
