We're thinking about spending our honeymoon in either Tahiti or Fiji. I've done some research on different places that would be a cool experience and I'm liking what I've read about these two places. Has anyone been there? Just wanted feedback on these places and any hotels they could recommend. I'm still looking up hotel and plane rates to see when's a good time to go.

I've been doing more research on where to travel and came across this information on travel safety overseas. With a lot of these issues arising with travellers in other countries, I thought someone might be interested in these tips.

    Travel Safety Tips

Traveling to unfamiliar destinations can bring to you the sort of troubles you do not want to experience while on the road namely: robbery, rape, or murder. Tourists often fall prey to perpetrators because they do not prepare properly before embarking on a trip. With the recent occurrences of violence and kidnapping of tourists in Mexico and parts of Central America, just thought I would post some tips:

links to current articles/ news about Dangers traveling to MEXICO and the SOUTH

    PACIFIC:

Mexico (near the border) is notorious for tourist violence:

    Here’s some tips:

Safety begins when you pack. To help avoid becoming a target, do not dress so as to mark yourself as an affluent tourist. Expensive-looking jewelry, for instance, can draw the wrong attention.

Always try to travel light. You can move more quickly and will be more likely to have a free hand. You will also be less tired and less likely to set your luggage down, leaving it unattended.

Carry the minimum number of valuables, and plan places to conceal them.

Taxis. Only take taxis clearly identified with official markings. Beware of unmarked cabs.
Trains. Well-organized, systematic robbery of passengers on trains along popular tourists routes is a problem. It is more common at night and especially on overnight trains.

If you see your way being blocked by a stranger and another person is very close to you from behind, move away. This can happen in the corridor of the train or on the platform or station.

Resources for U.S. Citizen Crime Victim

If you become the victim of a crime overseas, contact the nearest U.S. embassy, consulate, or consular agency for assistance. Also contact local police to report the incident and obtain immediate help with safety concerns.

    STAY SAFE OUT THERE!

Nessa-I'd suggest some of the smaller Islands like Bora Bora.Contact a travel agent -they will have brochures on all or most of the islands of the south pacific with beautifull pictures and descriptions of things to do or not do ,if you mostly want to get away from crowds.Lucky you!Have a fantastic time.

Well,it seems the killers were from the Netherlands.I really think that the South Pacific islands are some of the safest places on earth. It's a damn shame something like this had to happen.I've never heard of anything like this before in the SP.

I would go to Bora Bora in a heart beat. It'll be touristy and expensive I'm sure, but it does look like a world class paradise.

You can't go around worrying about people killing you. Besides, this is much more likely to happen in your own country.

I've been following this story and it's a lot bigger story than I thought it would be. Here's the latest news report on the South Pacific murders. http://bit.ly/h79bG

Bora Bora sounds great but I'm a bit stand off-ish after these reports.

I have to agree with Jimmy P - you can't let these nutjobs mess with your head. But then I do want to visit Bora Bora but the murders do concern me since I don't need that kind of stress while on vacation.

Jumping123 - Thanks for the info. I will have to take this into consideration when I make my decision.
