I'm going the neglect route. but only the top (shorter) layers of my hair seem to be dreading. is this typical?
I ended up just cutting the bottom layers to be the same length as the rest, which I may end up regretting.
anybody start dreads with layered hair? what was your experience?

My hair was layered before I started going the neglect route. It's been 4 months since I've brushed, and my hair has grown enough that you can't even tell it was ever layered. It wouldn't have been a problem.

Patience is definitely needed. I would suggest trying to forget you even have hair. The only time I even remember I've got a matted wad of locks on my head is when it's all on my neck and face when I'm hot and sweaty or when I'm in the shower.

lol try pulling it back once in a while, this seems to also help it to tangle up more with mine, i hate sweaty hair in my face!

I've got it pulled back in a nice poofy bunch as we speak. It's one of those hot, sweaty Virginia days I was speaking of. lol

I was a very patient person long before I decided to get dreads... seems to me that the biggest lesson I may be learning from dreads is how to love imperfection.

Or learning that everything is actually perfect in its own way, but learning to accept the way you view things as imperfect.

I had layers when I did mine, they look alright, no difference really from level hair, don't see what the big booboo is xD

My hair is dreaded in layers, it kinda had a mullet going on so i did trim the bottom ones to even out a little.. but i backcombed so i had to cut the dreads.. it looks fine i think i have a picture of them in my photo album named DAY 1 of dreads if u wanna see. There super layered in there..

I had layers too and the dreads are much longer underneath but for me they actually dreaded faster than the hair that I backcombed. maybe because they made thicker congos on their own.

My head was an elevated bob when I started - sorta like the tenshi's sig pic. Even with a drastic difference in length like that, I'm pretty much all even now.

yeah mine was layered, so the ones at the nape of my neck are super long compared to the ones near the top of my head. but, i don't think it looks odd or anything.
