Or, at the very least, very few people do (those few tend to be smarter than most). It's everywhere. The Gates thing. Healthcare. Iraq. Divisive issues become divisive because everybody's too fuckin opportunistic/stupid to say, "Well maybe it's not one way or the other." Middle ground, mufuckas.
It's not even a matter of middle ground. It's a matter of seeing past the two-sided dialectic. They ALWAYS administer two sides to every issue, in hopes that people will take one side or the other, not realizing that their opinions are given to them and that there is always another side to the story that you DON'T hear. Some examples: Left vs. Right Organized religion vs. Atheism Creationism vs. Evolution Capitalism vs. Socialism Male vs. Female Straight vs. Gay White vs. Black One of the biggest ways people are controlled is by taking the sides that are administered to them, so these sides can then be played off against one another to create chaos and distraction from what's REAL. Then out of the chaos they can offer up order as they see fit.
Or "black and white v. grey area" and "state media v. independent sources" (which can be said a thousand different ways, and as many different directions, but with the same spirit) As you said "some examples" but I feel those two really drive the hammer home.
I have always said that most of the so-called independent media is just as controlled as the "corporate media." Most of the alternative media is simply controlled opposition. The only truth people are going to find is on their own. Not from any website or publication.
You create your own duality unwittingly (truth vs. falsehood, etc.). Contradiction and conflict (as well as conciliation) is an inevitability. Where there is thought, there is contradiction.
We're raised, at least in most regions, with a very dualistic view of things. Good and evil, success or failure, right or wrong. I think it's pretty obvious in our culture - from how we look at our careers to other nations to war and most other societal issues. Oh well.
i prefer to look at the green and rainbow colored areas. definately not white nor black nor red. even my imaginary nation's flag is brown and green and turquoise and pumpkin. no red in it anywhere. (nor white nor black.) the dominant culture is totally fucked. i can't make it go away by pretending it isn't there, but i damd sure don't have internalize it, subscribe to it, nor knowingly contribute to perpetuating it. too many of the wrong things getting done seriously don't need to be.
I love that color. My mom painted her walls 'Ecru Bead'. It's too bad they don't have a Dunn Edwards here, as it was so cool, more than beige, but not really considered 'colorful'.
