That's very very debatable. I'd consider most of it fantasy - I know many who feel the same. They themselves admit many of their shows are "soft sci fi" (which is another word for fantasy with technology) and "space operas".
Dave Howe, the British president of the channel – which launched in 1992 and is now in 95m US homes – has come in for criticism over its rebranding, which hardcore fans have met with "disbelief and derision". However, the channel is pushing ahead with the change so it can trademark the new name – something it could not do with the more generic Sci Fi, meaning it missed out on money-making opportunities. http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2009/jul/07/sci-fi-rebranded-syfy
The Sci-Fi channel used to be good. They 'used' to show alot of classic sci-fi films from the 1950s and so on.--Within the last few years they totally changed, and now are just another rubbish channel. They could re-name it anything for all I care,I never even view it anymore.
Well the wrestling is a work of fiction! I find the name change to be lame. Most of their shows and movies are now lame. I used to be a big Ghost Hunters fan but now that show is even becoming super lame. There is just a whole lot of lame happening at the offices of SyFy! L A M E !
If you haven't noticed, it's been happening across the board to every good cable channel. I think the FCC started cracking down on good tv a couple years ago.
I've been finding that good Tv is starting to make a reemergence and has been trying to since the mid 2000s. Also, a few channels got ridiculously better in the 2000s - FX, AMC, and Discovery included (though Discovery is getting bad again =P) I don't think it's the channels to blame, really, I think it's the audience. They make it too damn easy by being total sheep.
I'll give you that AMC has gotten a lot better (Breaking Bad is one of my favorite shows), but all of the mature content on late night tv is gone. There's no more uncut shows, drug use, language, etc... I used to wait until past 11 for the "good" tv to come on. Apart from that, reality tv has run rampant, History Channel scarcely has any history any more, everything has basically just gotten as bland as rice.
My friend just told me it's because of marketing DVDs and shit. They can't 'own' a genre, so they had to lose the name.
To be trendy. I realized this while watching 'Joan of Arcadia' one day (Hey, it came on after Tales from the Darkside) Not Science Fiction in my book...
I don’t care how they spell sci-fi as long as they produce quality programming Unlike some of those cheesy made-for-tv movies involving anything from killer ants to T-Rex Hotwater
