I have a mate that is a tax accountant, does well for himself, nice house But he spends 40/50 hrs a week crunching numbers, doing peoples taxes, and he's probably going to go 40+ years doing that shit. Other accountants too, what a boring flippin job, how do they not wnat to shoot themsleves in the head at the end of the working week? Apart from the pay packet, who on earth would want to be a dentist getting a face full of peoples bad breath day in day out? Again apart from the pay packet, who would want to be a GP?, spending all day freezing off old peoples warts and boils, telling them how to treat there jock rash, and with cost Medical indemnity insurnace, they dont end up earning all that much anyway
95% of people don't really have that much of a choice in the matter. 99% of people settle for whatever brings them the most money. The real world ain't pretty.
My dad is an accountant type thing/bookkeeper for his business (pipe and valve fabrication and machining). He seems to like it okay, he's good at it, and it's a nice cushy office job with an a/c while most the other guys have to do hard labor, he doesn't even have to get up from his chair except to Xerox stuff. He's just good at it and oftentimes people just enjoy doing stuff they're good at. I work at a fast food restaurant, but it's a small town one and I'm a shift manager and the day shift cook, so I get more respect than most fast food employees, and while I don't want to work there forever, I'd like to better myself and increase my wages, I'm good at it and I enjoy it and enjoy the people I work with. I rarely come home frowning. A lot of people would throw their noses right up at the idea of flipping burgers, but it's a job, and it's not a bad one.
My mom works for CPS and sees some pretty fucked up shit. After working there for 10 years it can definitely take its toll.
i chose my profession simply due to what could make me the most money, while doing something I wouldn't hate. I do well for myself as well - although i fully realize its not what I wanted to do. but then that's what week ends and vacations are for; if one can attempt to balance "reality" with "fairy tales" and "dreams". What I think that sucks about the whole thing is - I bet most of your pals friends are accountants as well. People gather the to people the share tasks with. When i leave my job, the last thing i want to talk about is the job. I often skip the friday drink after work, because all they want to do is talk about work.
Some people do what they do for the money. Some do it out of necessity. I think very few people actually like what they do. I don't see how anyone can be truly happy working for someone else.
yeah, kind of the point of this thread, even a job like that, that most would make fun of, is a lot more social and fun than sitting in an office all day with maybe 2 or 3 people you dont really like, in front of a computer crunching away numbers...and all for what double the pay packet to buy a whole bunch of stuff half of which you dont really need. Hmmmm
My bffs brother is an accountant and works for the state. He says he LOVES his job, but he's a math kinda person. He said he'd go nuts in any other job. I don't see how he doesn't go nuts in the one he's got. My dad's a truck driver. He hates it, but doesn't really have a choice. He went into the Army as a truck driver and he's done it ever since. He'd like a different kind of job but can't find one that pays as well and the one he hates. So, some people just love what they do despite how boring it seems to everyone else, some people just have to do it because that's all they know.
It should always be a goal to enjoy your work. I think a lot of people fail to realize the opportunities they have.. unfortunately, it is commonly accepted that you're not supposed to like your job, but it pays the bills so you need it.
there is no place for wonder really, it is an obvious answer to an obvious question. people need money so they can survive the world of today. most people in the world don`t work the jobs thy wish they did, they do it simply and only because they need the payment.
Hi *, money is only the smallest part of my motivation to do things. Compared to other people I earn big bucks, but compared to people of my own profession it's only average. I trade money for more valuable things like fun, opportunities to learn etc. I guess that's the way to go to reach retirement age healthy. I've seen people with jobs that they are overqualified for, like PHDs driving taxi or flipping burgers. Some of them do it, because they have no choise. However, some have choosen such jobs because they like all the people they meet during their shifts. Often such people are the very interesting ones. To come back to the topic, the times I often wondered why people choose the job they've choosen was at university. I was a lecturer and sometimes I saw people in engineering courses who had no talents nor did they had passion for their work. I guess they ran after the money. But sticking in a job for 40 years only because of the money, doesn't sound like fun. Regards Gyro
i enjoy simple, repetitive, mindless work. it allows me to zone out and think about whatever is on my mind, rather than focusing on work all day, which then allows the time to pass faster getting me out of there seemingly sooner. it's better than sitting there feeling sorry for yourself because you don't have a job you're passionate about anyway.
I almost forgot this. This is another great reason to have the job I have. It's not a take home job and it's not stressful when we don't have a bunch of incompetent fucks working.
