G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
    Movie Blurb by Shale
    August 7, 2009

This movie was not prescreened for reviewers here in the States, which usually indicates that they expect bad reviews and want to delay them. On Rottentomatoes.com almost two out of three reviewers have panned it. However, it will likely lead the box office sales this week.

I will start my blurb on the subject of movie critics giving this kind of movie a bad review. As I noted in my blurb on G-Force last week, where only about a quarter of the reviewers gave a fresh score to this 3-D PG rated movie, what does an 8-year-old care about plot holes, clear quests, charismatic heroes or strong villains. "Pointless Frenzy?" Yeah, that works!

I fault the critics who don't "get it" with these summer movies made for a select audience of young ppl. So, this movie will get slammed by the serious "professional" critics, while the real ppl will flock to see it for what it is, which is not a serious movie.

Here are some of the FAVORABLE review quotes to let you know what to expect:
    ------------------------
‘GI Joe’ is big, dumb, loud and utterly relentless: basically, everything you could ever want from a summer blockbuster. - Tom Huddleston, Time Out London
    ------------------------
G.I. Joe could quite possibly have the worst script of all time but the action scenes are so exhilarating that it warrants a viewing. - Kevin McCarthy, BDK Reviews
    ------------------------
There's no way to take this movie seriously, and that's exactly what makes it so much fun. - Hernán Alcerreca, FILMINK (Australia)
    ------------------------
Sommers bucks the bad buzz with a throwaway blast of solid, stupid fun. - Matthew Leyland, Total Film
    ------------------------

Well, I saw the movie this afternoon and I enjoyed it for what it was; lots of action, fantastic toys on-screen and an absurd story that tops any James Bond movie of my youth.

Did I say lots of action? Continuous for most of the two hours, interspersed with adolescent humor and just a little girl chasing. This PG-13 movie should appeal to its audience of young men.

Do I need to tell any of the story?

Our villain - and we know this from backstory going to the 17th century - is arms dealer James McCullen (Christopher Eccleston). His MARS Corporation has made nano technology weapons that can consume entire cities just like Gort in the recent The Day The Earth Stood Still.

In transporting this very dangerous weapon, our team of really gung-ho soldiers, including Duke (Channing Tatum) and Ripcord (Marlon Wayans) is ambushed (you know that is coming) by commandos that outgun them with super sophisticated weapons. They are rescued by another commando team with equally cool toys and are taken to the international GIJOE (not a person but an acronym for the Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity) headed by General Hawk (Dennis Quaid).

Duke and Ripcord join the team with some additional training on the new toys, er ... awesome military stuff. Part of their training is done by Sergeant Stone (Brendan Fraser in a cameo appearance)

The rest of the story is our GI Joe team fighting baddies from their underground base in the deserts of Egypt to Cobra's base under the Arctic ice caps. With even more fantastic toys.

You know this movie was made for teen boys and young men (up to 64) when you see the protective uniform worn by Scarlett (Rachel Nichols).

I've seen women soldiers and police in protective gear and have never seen the gear so dynamically contoured. This pic doesn't begin to show the size of that suit's bosom.

That's about all there is to say about this movie. It was fun for me and I recommend it for everyone except serious movie critics.

Just saw this Today. Was a bit better then expected was going to be. I did not like the Commercials for it at all. But was reading Higher Reviews on alot of the sites.

Grew up with alot these characters as a kid, so obviously was look into how they where done for this movie. A couple character thoughts:

    Cobra Commander:

This is the one I have the biggest Mixed thoughts on. They portrayed him more as the doctor in this film rather then going straight as him being the sole Leader. I didn't mind this though. I retro spec I think the person playing him could pull him off, Though we will see in the next movie.

My Biggest Grip on him is, At the end they give an ample sequence for him to use atleast one of cobra commanders masks, Was expecting the kowl and thought it rediculouse they didn't go for doing that after they did destro so well.

Could of been done a tad better, Probably a different actor. He was showing up rather weak in the film, In which he is not. He also kissed up to Combra Commander a bit much for me. Though My biggest issue I have with him, was He is physically stronger and in better shape.

Attitude wise was pretty well set in the most part other then being to much a coward. Business is #1, Maybe we will see more from him next time.

    Zartan:

Was pretty well done overall, Think they could of showed off his new real face though after the injections at some point. But the Setup on him at the end pretty much pans everything out for another movie.

Renegade wise, he was mostly into following orders in the flick. But mostly it looked like to flaunt off his disquise tricks.

Don't have to say very much here, these two where down pretty much to the T. Obviously Snake Eyes Never talks, Storm Shadow is more quick to action then anything. They should of kept Snake eyes helm more smooth I think but overall These two did steal the show on thier own quite a bit.

These are just a few in the movie for now. Overall action wise was very enjoyable and was a fun watch. Will wait for the next one to come out to see how it all pans out.

Other Minor things that was done rathe well to point out was Cobra's base under water as well as the Knight Raven Jet. Was realy impressive to see those in there.
