so i've been noticing that my dreads have a certain "funk" (smell) to them when they're wet. this is the same smell that i started to get with my old dreads, which was also one of the reasons why I cut them off. i had that smell after about 5 years of having dreads and just dealt with it for a while before cutting them off. (my first set of dreads were backcombed to start)

with my current set, it's been roughly a year or so of having formed dreads (formed naturally) and they have that smell again. i probably wash them every 2-4 days, or as I'm able to.

my question is how to get rid of what's causing this smell (probably mold/mildew). washing less? putting tea tree oil on them? other oils?

i've started putting tea tree oil on them and probably won't get them wet as often. any other advice?

I'm probably gonna get flamed for this, but...

I haven't smelled any funk smell. It could be because mine are thinner and don't funk up that easy or because my hair has always smelled odd.

Yeah try that it sounds pretty convincing, like the water not drying :p
Do you have a ShamWOW around? It's nice to dry your hair off with, 'cause it soaks it up. It worked with my non dreadded hair

I haven't run into this problem yet, but the only thing I could think of is what HDH said. You're just not letting them dry completely. Are you going to bed with them when they haven't dried thoroughly??

Maybe some people who have had locks for a few years will be able to answer this Q better

yeah air em out real nice or blowdry if you have to... try baking soda rinses if you don't already, tea tree oil is a good idea too.

or dump a bottle of patchouli oil on your head.

They need to dry after washes, or your getting residue caught up in them

I'd do one of the deep cleans and see if that helps... I was thinking the same thing... that maybe you're not drying them well. I always use a blow dryer on mine if I'm showering before bed.

Taking a walk in the sunshine is the best solution imo for drying dreads
