It gets really confusing fast. Troll metal, Viking metal, Pirate metal, gore-grind, ambient deathcore... what does it all mean? I'll help by dipping into past experience to show you some different metal subgenres. First is old school death metal: * What is old school death metal?
Old school death metal would be refering to some of the oriiginal death metal bands, or bands that play in that style. Off the top of my head Id describe it as more thrashy and what not than say some shit like Cannibal Corpse. Listen to the band Death, and you can kinda get an idea. Their are some other really good bands, just search around
It means nothing. Just a bunch of names pretentious people put before the word metal. Troll metal? I've never heard of that one.
Black, Power, Thrash, Death, Doom, Prog, Heavy / "Traditional" and maybe grindcore...that's a grey area. That's it. Everything else is bullshit, or *random genre*-metal, like industrial / metal. doom is the only one with a significant number of sub-genres. It's not that hard, all it takes is a little bit of time exploring the scene...which isn't exactly a chore if it's something you're into. since i've edited this post twice maybe it isn't THAT simple, but still...best way to learn is just to dive in, make a fool of yourself, and learn.
Viking, pirate and troll metal are such stupid names. They're all the same thing, and I think viking is a pretty well-accepted term for the sound. Ambient metal is so stupid (no offense). Quit blending genres, we're past the fucking 90's. It's ok to like ambient, and like metal, and like how different they are... but that's just my opinion.
I can see the reason why a band like Finntroll wouldn't like to be called viking metal (example by the way, dunno if they really care but it's one of the most typical examples of a nordic folk metal band that could be called troll metal ) but troll, pirate, melodic black, atmospheric black and blackened death/thrash metal etc. etc. are mainly nonsense and just for nuancing. If you're not into a subgenre like black or folk metal do not bother with the nuancing sub sub sub sub genre names
