Canadian stimulus $$$ will pay Bill Clinton Bill Clinton loves to collect six-figure speaking fees in Canadian cities, with recent visits to big cities like Vancouver but also such second-tier venues as Kelowna, B.C., and Hamilton, Ontario. But Canada's taxpayers are helping pick up the tab for the latest "Elvis Sighting" in the Great White North. A $3 million grant from the Canadian government's tourism stimulus fund is going to the Canadian National Exhibition and will help bring Clinton to Toronto, according to the Globe and Mail newspaper. The exhibition begins on August 21st. As many as 25,000 will hear America's 42nd president, recently in the news for securing the release of two American journalists held by the hermit kingdom of North Korea. Clinton gets around. The former president celebrated his 63rd birthday Monday in a posh restaurant at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, with an entourage of rich supporters and former aides. The missus was in Africa. The crowd in Toronto will be asked to pay, but far less than charged by the private firms that book Clinton to events. He recently shared the dais with his successor, ex-President George W. Bush. The tab in Toronto will range from $19.99 to $50, Canadian. I'm not sure yet how I feel about this.
So will Bill be picking up a six figure sum for speaking to all those people? Did Canadian Tax payers pay for his Birthday celebration? How much of the $3 million is going towards this? To me it is trying to make a story where there probably isn't one.
Odon you sure are an inquisitive little chap! Stimulus money going anywhere besides the economy or reform does not make sense to me.
I'm asking those question because perhaps those particular elements were designed to make this seem a lot worse than it is. Perhaps Lunar' will not answer, so I will endeavour to find out myself. I'll make sure Canadians are not being ripped off... Isn't boosting tourism helping the economy?
If he is being payed I am assumong the cost of the ticket will cover his fee: Tickets for Clinton's speech at BMO Field will be available... The ticket prices are $19.99 to $50 . Ottawa's $100-million (over two/three years) Marquee Tourism Events Program: http://www.actionplan.gc.ca/initiatives/eng/index.asp?mode=7&initiativeID=101 I'm assuming all this will have to be audited, so perhaps we will find out in a few months.
