Well then it just puzzles the heck outta me how you could enjoy this song,,haha.

I would think something like "One More for the Road", by ol' blue eyes.

But I know what you mean by the way people have gone, with their stories. My mom is 88, and met my dad while they were both singing opera in new york. They sang overseas in the USO, in the Phillipines and Japan. She's got a lot of stories. Never know how long though,, :(

I'm not exactly like your average old person.Hell,I don't even like old people.They're--well --old you know. The other day at work(roofing) my sons and I blocked an alley with our truck. These fricken old people started bitching about it and I said "you fucken old people sure don't have any respect for working people ,do you ?"Shit, turns out they were younger than I.I don't run with old people 'cuz most of 'em are grumpy.I still smoke dope and I took more than a hundred hits of you know what back in the day.I never divulged my age in here because I will probably now get no respect.(if I ever got any anyway)Just the way it is.--------Meanwhile,I think I'll listen to that song again. And fuckinay I still roof because I have an aversion to rocking chairs and I like to hang with my kids.

That's what my dad would have said. Bein' an opera singer, he held those rat pack boys in great disdain.

I broke away from his thinking to make my own choices. I couldn't stand opera when I was young. Now, I can enjoy ANY kind of music, as long as it has quality, and isn't overly "produced". Some things are just all "package", you know.

As Pressed Rat, I do disagree with your negative rep for Frank Sinatra. Can't say I enjoyed his music when I was listening to Hendrix, the Cream, and the Stones, and John Mayall and the like, but now I do. I like anything that has character, style, quality, and awesome personal phrasing. Frank meets those criteria as far as I'm concerned. I'm not worried about his lifestyle, he's gone, you know.

So, from throughout your life, who stands out? I'm interested. :)

Yeah, I mean, it's hard for me to sit down and really enjoy Sinatra's music, but I can still appreciate it for what it is. My tastes in music are pretty eclectic and very much diverse. There is little I don't listen to, except for mainstream pop, hip-hop, country, etc.

I listen to everything. It's embarrassing at times, because people tend to put an ID on you because of the music you listen to. But at any particular moment, you may hear me playing rock, blues, jazz, classical, or country, or hip-hop.

Only certain pieces though. Just the best of the best of the best, in my opinion.

It's all so I can pick something up from it, some beat, some phrasing, some off rhythm, some odd chord change, some melody, some voice,,etc.

It's like going to a restaurant. You don't make the choice necessarily, but once there, you can find something you may like.

I'm a musician, so I try to grab this and that from anything I hear.

But like you, I just have to turn the dial to some things,,

Well,if you had to grow up listening ONLY to Sinatra,King Cole,Andrews sisters ,Benny Goodman,Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, and all the other big bands,et al you might feel differantly. They have their place for nostalga's sake along with Theresa Brewer,Eddie Fisher,Patty Page,Ames Brothers,Bing Crosby and on and on.When Ray Charles,Little Richard,Jerry lee, Fats Domino and plenty others came along, believe me ,it was a wonderfull thing to be a part of.I've seen it branch out into all the types now going --the natural progression of it is fantastic. So anyway---the song that started this whole thing is especially touching to me because I'm a guy that's lost friends that I first got drunk with, discussed religion with, raised hell with, got in trouble with, worked on hot rods with, rode motorcycles with dated with--all of it.Female friends that I hung with ,dated, loved and did most of what I did with the guys. They KNEW me.Some few still KNOW me.Death and disease have taken their toll.Nothing unusual there--or even imporant.I,after all am no body.Really.Just another sack of meat passing thru to nowhere.I get it.-------Now listen to that song again with my shoes on.Or listen in 30 years.--------Or not.

I remember one of the only vinyl albums I ever owned was Ravi Shankar, with Allah Rakkah on tabla doing ragas.

Far as opera, I couldn't stand it in my youth. I felt it represented my dad "showing off". Now I can enjoy the talent, as you say. I enjoyed hearing Pavarotti, but my favorites are female singers, like Maria Callas, especially. Some of their life stories are fascinating as well.

My mom and dad sang back in the late thirties, just around the time you were born, into the late forties, when they sang for the troops.

Good to know some old fucks are still around here.

    Yeah, they're droppin' like flies,,

Me, I didn't tend to accumulate friends over the years. I felt that was just another form of accumulation. When I moved on, I moved on. I still know maybe one guy from elementary school. He's a CPA. Does my taxes for me for free. Nothing to it, really. I'm not wealthy. Enough to live on, and that's it.

But I never felt that people could be counted on, so I just didn't gather people to myself, just to see them go. Myself, my kids, my wife, that's about it. She goes to church, and those people we've known for 30 years, but I'm not religious, so I don't really like to associate with "Christians", though I consider myself one. I think the real meaning of the word has been lost over the passage of time.

I'm glad you enjoy the song. If it has personal meaning to you, that's all that matters. Trying to share things like that with others often ends up with disappointment. You wish you could share things, but others often don't get it, unless you hit the right ones. It seems we spend our lives looking for the right ones.

    :)

I really love that song. A friend turned me on to it a few months back and it's been on my playlist ever since. It really is shiver-inducing.
Another one that does that to me is Show Me Heaven by Maria McKee. Its kinda old, tho. :p
