Hi i am on my first hydro grow and having major problems, it all started when my water level was dropping and nutrients (ionic) got stronger in res and eventually i nute burned them so i filled res up with ph adjusted water(5.8) and gave them water but now i am getting signs of mag def which is making the leaves go brown and brittle and fall off and other leaves turn upwards like they are praying also some of the new growth coming in is growing twisted and deformed with yellow veins and leaves curling down the way in claw like shape. I added 6 teaspoon of epsoms salt to (100 litre) res and watered twice now i hav emptied again back to ph adjusted water, wasnt sure how much epsoms to use so i thought was best to go back to water, problem is i dont know wot to do regarding adding nutes back into res, i dont want to burn them again. Forgot to mention my setup, 600w hps, flood and drain using 4"rockwool blocks with clay pebbles, water once a day for 15mins due to rockwool holds a lot of water, temp 75-80, humidity 50% with plenty air movement, light 18" from tops of plants, plants are month old and 6" in height, also forgot to mention they seem stunted as well, not growing that quick at all. Any help on the situation would be much appreciated, and how much nutes should i start giving them again??? Thanks.
When will you add nutes? Sounds like yer overreacting, when res gets low refill add nutes. Maybe not as much nutes as originally, try 1/2 as much as first time. with yer setup ya might try twice a day for 7 minutes each. pics would help also. With hydro setups nutes must be kept up, where else do they get food to grow? What kind of nutes are you using?>)
Already giving them quarter strength ionic coco grow nutes, but it seems like they have defiencies but dont know wot ones and how to fix them, and is it possible for a plant to have more than 1 deficiency at the same time, some leaves on my plants are turning pale green then yellow eventually and others showing signs of magnesium def, and other leaves with yellow veins but with healthy green leaves, i need some help, hope the pics help and thanks. ps, ph 5.9 r/h 50% temp 75 -80 ,ppm 350.
Not familiar with coco grow nutes, but if you've determined they have a deficiency then you need to feed them more. Keep the water level up, as the plants ingest the nutes the water will become less nutritive. So add more nutes once a week. Then every 2-3 weeks dump the water and start with fresh mix. Also using hydroton like you are they may need to be watered 2-3 times a day for short periods of time as the clay balls don't seem to retain moisture as well as coco chips which is what I started using after trying the clay, I like coco cause it holds moisture longer, so I only water once a day. With clay you might need to water every 8-12 hours for maybe 4-10 minutes to keep roots moist, it's all about what makes the plants happy!>)
Ok i have emptied my res out and filled it back up and added advanced nutes(that came today)keeping with 350 ppm@ 0.7 ec. How long do u think i should leave it before i start upping the ppm ? Plants are 2 month old.
I don't get that involved with numbers, hydro growing is easy 'cause the plants will let ya know what they need in a day or so. If they don't green up, add more nutes, if they show signs of overfeeding flush 'em. I try to keep things simple for the new growers so they won't give up.>)
I'm a soil grower so not much help to you but there looking sim to how one of males are starting to go after potting on in cheap multi purpose. All i can really do is feed and watch out for burning and adjust if needed.
I would say that if you'd just burnt your plants a little and then quickly observed the effect of a deficiency, that unless your previous nutrients were really poor quality what you probably have/had was a lock-out. Something else in overabundance locked out Magnesium. I don't have my books handy or I could tell you which nutrients can do that, but it doesn't really matter at this point. The fix is simple and it's what you've already done. Flush, reintroduce nutrients at reduced strength, and increase PPM to normal as plants recover. Switching up to Advanced Nutrients was a good choice, BTW. They've got their stuff properly balanced nutrient-wise so you should be good to go from here. Just keep an eye on your pH and ppm and you should be fine. AN even has some new stuff that's supposed to be out soon that - from what they say - you don't even have to watch the pH and ppm with. We'll see, I'm definitely going to put it to the test.
Rock; that's why hydro is easier IMO dirt doesn't show nutes probs for 3-4 days then the adjustment process takes another 3-4 days to see if it worked or if what ya adjusted was even the prob, if not ya have to start the whole process over, etc.
They do look stunted and deprived. i use advance with a little cal mag. Go ahead and try to get the numbers back up. They don't look burnt. use good light for stimulation. Consider more waterings.
I have a few pieces of advice for you. First of all Advanced has a great product line and are very easy to use and you shouldnt have this problem with them but make sure your PH is stabile if it isnt and its bouncing it will lock out nutes and the plants will show signs of deffincies and no matter what you add to correct this it will not help if the PH isnt stable and the other is when it comes to nutes less is more dont go crazy adding supliments you will do more harm than good and last of all it takes time to heal so give them some. best of luck
