I'm not entirely sure. Perhaps it's in the wrong subforum. I made this thread a while ago actually. It was ironically bumped by somebody advertising junk

Interesting thoughts. Of course we have a generation gap, the difference in the mindset of the older generation and our generation is extreme. The world changed faster and more dramatically than it ever had before and the divide was natural. I'm unsure as to what you mean by romantic love. Didn't the bards and writers of Europe use the idea in the same way hundreds of years ago?

I think the only times was externally imposed values are pernicious are when they stifle an individual's potential for happiness and growth. For example, someone who would be much happier as a poor musician becomes a business person instead because the people he knows value money more than music and art. Or people who are unable to be happy wearing anything but expensive brand name clothing which they can't afford.

My thoughts regarding romantic love have more to do with the way love is portrayed. It has long been accepted that love generally entailed a period of courtship (often the most passionate part of the affair), followed by marriage (another ideal which has been altered, though I'm not arguing for it). It was usually accepted that the passion which occurs early in the relationship would fade away and be replaced by a deeper, more enduring love. We have recently learned that the latter part is not the ideal, and have been taught to idealize the initial period of passion. This has been portrayed over and over in movie after movie, which people watch and, usually unconsciously, take as a reflection of reality. These are the same people who are unable to build a stable relationship, because nothing can meet the ideal they have been taught to believe in.

I would expound more on this, but I have to run.

Well let’s see if we can revive this for politics.

    Margaret Thatcher famously claimed
there is no such thing as society” – and that was a political statement based well and truly in her right wing political beliefs and ideas.

Those neo-conservative (British version) ideas liked to downplay collective (societal) action in favour of the promotion of the individual’s obligation to look after themselves within the framework of a free market.

Do people prefer to live under a tyranny or under a more democratic system?

To live under the rule of kings was ‘normal’ for many people, even in pre-revolution America many people considered themselves loyal subjects of the British crown, but those feeling changed to the belief that George III was a tyrant and that Americans would not live under tyranny.

To me it is a good thing to step back and take a look at the society and culture you live in, and it is always important to question. But in political terms it seems to me dangerous to divorce yourself from them.

Society is real, everybody acts the same way, you have to be "normal" enough if you want to play a role in society and be respected. So yeah in a way you have to be forced a certain way, nobody has to do anything but everybody knows that it will just make life easier if they just give in to it and act that way. People have been raised to think of people a certain way, talk a certain way, so they expect the same type deal from everybody so if you don't meet the standards then they get judgemental.
With that said, i do think in my own way and don't let any of society's crap get to me, i just feel like i put on an act for when i'm around people.

I only do that with old people because I'm afraid I'm going to tax their fragile minds.
