"Deprogramming the masses since 1547" Mission Statement For centuries, mankind knew all there was to know about the shape of the Earth. It was a flat planet, shaped roughly like a circle, with lots of pointy things hanging down from the underside. On the comparatively smooth topside, Europe sat in the middle of the circle, with the other continents scattered about the fringes, and parts of Africa hanging over the edge. The oceans lapped against the sides of the Earth, and in places ran over, creating currents that would pull over the edge ships that ventured too far out to sea. The space beyond the edge of the world was a dark realm inhabited by all sorts of unholy beasts. Fire and brimstone billowed up from the very depths of hell itself and curled 'round the cliffs whose infinite length jutted straight down to the darkest depths . . I wonder if Sarah Palin is a member? http://www.alaska.net/~clund/e_djublonskopf/Flatearthsociety.htm
Some people believe a round Earth is the result of a giant conspiracy involving many factions, where else would it go?
Ive never went into space and looked at the earth - ive seen what CGI can do for hollywood; it wouldn't take much to fake some pictures of a round/flat earth - I don't believe either.
Well, if we're speaking solely based on personal experience, it's still pretty fucking obvious that the earth's not flat. Anyone with the money can get on a plane and fly around the world, proving that it's round. Its exact shape is a little more difficult to guess at, but based on all the others we see in the sky, I think it's pretty safe to assume that the earth is round just like the rest of them. And that's ignoring all the scientific evidence which I would class as being outside personal experience (for most of us).
You can prove that the earth is round with an ordinary telescope, on a clear day. Go to any major port city and watch large ships head out to sea. The ship's hull will disappear over the horizon first, followed by its upper cabin structure and smokestack. The radar antenna will be the last thing to go. If the surface of the ocean is curved at that one place, it's a good bet that it is curved everywhere. And if you follow a curve far enough, it becomes a circle, and you go all the way around. This is the logic that Christopher Columbus was following when he sailed west, to go east. He had no evidence other that what he could see in his telescope. I like the Flat Earth Society because it reminds us all that there was a time when virtually everyone on earth believed that the world was flat. Proof that the majority can be dead wrong about important things.
Yes, it is. They make no attempt to refute any accepted theories regarding gravity, etc. They use the same logic that was used centuries ago.
