Do you think there is room for idealists in this world?

Often you see older people who were strong idealists in the past, but now just go with the mainstream.
I think that when you are young and don't have responsibilities its easy and not a burden to have ideals and to live up with them.
But once you grow older, it takes alot to lets say, live like a anarchist, unless you're not alone in it. I respect people who can live outside the mainstream, but i think its difficult. Its a nice thing to dream of better, but you need a strong heart to live up to it and keep it up. I used to be a anarchist in heart and soul, now i'm opening op a internet bussiness in the reselling of lp's and other things. I used to hate capitalists and everything involved around it. Now its a way to gain more freedom in society. same with my father, he used to be in a anarchist movement, he used to squat houses (if thats the right word) and live on communes, but after a while he got back to the mainstream and picked up life again, he even went in politics. I think many want to escape society, and many learn hard lessons when trying it, and few can keep it up, in the end you're often just punishing yourself and achievement nearly nothing.

Times used to be different, but i feel there is less and less room for alternative living, or living up to ideals in basic.

I feel like this world is a mental cage, you're forced to think like the rest, otherwise you'll end up learning difficult lessons.

Don't know if this topic belongs here, but what worth has philosophy if you can't live up to them, or don't have to room and space to do so?

Of course there's room for idealism. If you have lofty, idealistic aspirations and are willing to pursue them even in the face of stifling opposition then you're an idealist, whether or not you have succeeded yet. If you give up, declaring your idealistic aspiration to be unrealistic, you are no longer an idealist. Of course you will encounter forces acting against you; as long as you remain unbroken and striving towards your goal you are an idealist. If you succeed then you may call yourself a successful idealist. That being said some goals are loftier than others amd there are obstacles in this world that will push against you. Whether or not there is room for your idealism depends on how effective you are at pushing back. This is decided by you.

It is very hard to completely escape society unless you choose to travel into the wilds and live totally on your own. Kill or grow your own food, make your own clothes, find your own salt, etc. Anything less and you are buying into society to some degree.

As far as living up to ideals, it depends on what you ideals are and how far you wish to compromise them if and when that is necessary.

Mental cages are made mentally, not physically. No one can make you "think like the rest" short of brain washing. You can act like the rest, and think like the rest when needed; but your ideals can always remain intact to be used at the first opportunity that presents itself.
Ideals can always be strived for, that's why they're called ideals, They are the ideal that we can try to achieve but not always attain.
