i've heard plenty, of course, it's unavoidable living in hawaii and i've heard enough to say what i like and i don't like. but so far my name recognition extends to bob marley and groundation. i've been alright with just listening to the reggae station here (even though it can play a lot of crappy stuff) but i'm moving from hawaii and i don't want to be deprived. lol. but i dig the two aforementioned acts immensely, anyone have any recommendations?
I recommend Black Uhuru as well. I have the same with reggae, I get annoyed with a lot of tunes instantly as well but others have just the right groove and have everything I like about reggae. Black Uhuru has the most songs like that for me personally. Otherwise it's just tunes or particular albums I like most. Ashanti Roy (of the Congo's) is a good one as well, so I recommend his album Sign of the star. Jacob Miller - Jacob 'Killer' Miller is also a great album. You also might wanna check out some stuff with Tena Stelin, with Bush chemists or Sound Iration. Well, otherwise it's just loose tunes (I prefer a mixed list anyway) or with more dub influences.
whispering woods, i looked a few of em up and i liked what i heard, especially black uhuru...i'll do some more listening. thanks

i like the reggae Bad Brains does. even though they're really more of a hardcore band, they're actually really talented reggae musicians.
[sorry, i posted this in another thread, but it works here too] you should get a couple of good compilations, you not only get to hear a bunch of different artists, but if the comps are from different producers you'll get to learn a little bit about their sounds as well the producer is sometimes just as important as the artist, compare 'heart of the congos' with any of their other releases for example
one of these days someone should make a sticky for this question, it gets asked a lot just a list of classic roots albums/re-issues/comps for newbies who like marley no digital, not too many deejays, not too much dub abyssinians - satta massagana black uhuru - black sounds of freedom burning spear - marcus garvey cornell campbell - i shall not remove culture - two sevens clash dennis brown - the promised land / words of wisdom gladiators - trenchtown mix up gregory isaacs - cool ruler / soon forward horace andy - good vibes hugh mundell - africa must be free by 1983 jacob miller - who say jah no dread joe gibbs & errol thompson - the mighty two johnny clarke - dreader dread lee perry - arkology linval thompson - ride on dreadlocks max romeo - war in a babylon meditations - deeper roots mighty diamonds - go seek your rights steel pulse - handsworth revolution studio one kings sugar minott - black roots twinkle brothers - rasta pon top wailing souls - inchpinchers wayne wade - black is our color viceroys - consider yourself yabby you - conquering lion something like that . . .
