EPA WILL USE POOR KIDS AS GUINEA PIGS IN NEW STUDY ON PESTICIDES The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), led by Bush appointees, plans to launch a new study in which participating low income families will have their children exposed to toxic pesticides over the course of two years. For taking part in these studies, each family will receive $970, a free video camera, a T-shirt, and a framed certificate of appreciation. In October, the EPA received $2 million to do the study from the American Chemistry Council, a chemical industry front group that includes members such as Dow, Exxon, and Monsanto. The EPA's Linda Sheldon says the study is vital, because so little is known about how small children's bodies absorb harmful chemicals. As of press time, none of the EPA's employees are offering to have their own children take part in this research project. The Organic Consumers Association is calling on the nation's citizens to demand the EPA forgo this project before its scheduled launch in early 2005. yuck, doesnt that just make you sikc, Im from Aus. however i imagine there will in the near future be stuff like that over here. That is so sad, so wrong, although does it really suprise anyone, not me.
This study was planned for NE Florida (I don't know if other localities were/are going to be studied or not), not too far from where I live. But, there has been quite a bit of concern and publicity citing how it would negatively impact the families involved. Anyhow, I really don't think it will happen like originally planned. I am pretty sure many, if not most, of the people who were planning on partipating have backed out. Hopefully, the whole study will be cancelled.
why do you say that..?? from this subject being brought up before http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44607&page=1&pp=10 i think it does not seem as bad as is being made out..but you seem to know a bit about it ?.
Because of the way they were going about it. Our local "alternative" newspaper did a story about this and I have talked to other folks as well and it is my understanding that the families who were to be tested were all very low income, mostly minority people who were in essence being bribed with video cameras and money to see how pesticide use affected their children. One of the big issues has been that the families would not be told that pesticides were harmful, but that they would be told that the testers were looking for pesticide use in their homes. Many people have feared that this would cause people to use more pesticides or to use them unsafely because that is what the testers wanted. As for NE Florida, there are other pesticide issues here, too. I have heard that people who have lived here for a long time have more pesticide residue in their system than people from other areas. I am fairly certain that this is caused by all the spraying. During the summer months, there is pretty constant spraying done to keep mosquitos at bay and recently a residential neighborhod was "accidently" sprayed with a very strong herbacide that caused many people to get sick. Chemicals are way overused here. I have never lived any where else where there is so much spraying. I think it is scary.
Stochastic Human Exposure and Dose Simulation 'Wow what does all that mean ?' Well it means a lot , but if you don't know you don't know . http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0CYP/is_6_108/ai_63937869 'What do i get ?' What will my family receive for its participation in the study? You will receive both monetary and non-monetary compensation A Study t-shirt An official, framed Certificate of Appreciation A Study bib for your baby A calendar A Study Newsletter A video camcorder, if you complete all of the study activities over the two-year study period 'mmm that looks good , sign me up...' A 2 year study is a very long thing to undertake , the 'is it worth it' factor is prety low i would imagine but the benefits are high imho... Would a study on a higher 'class' of people be any more informative...most people that take part i would imagine are a good representative of the general North American population..the thought that people are being taken advantage of does a great injustice to the study imho. People that say the study is taking advantage of the 'lower' class i think maybe missing the point. Yeah on the face of it i can see what you mean..but hopefuly the end result is for for a positive change.. Its a bit naive of me maybe but Why is this important? The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) has pledged to increase its efforts to provide a safe and healthy environment for children. Current information on young children’s exposures to chemicals used in consumer products is very limited. This study will help the U.S. EPA to better understand: how young children are exposed to pesticides and other chemicals from common consumer products when these exposures occur levels of exposure at home I can see what they are trying to do...over indulging on risk is not healthy i don't think. It all looks scarey i can see that, but i don't think it is .... but what do i know ?..
unbelievably sick. this is so disgusting I cant stand it. why has no one asked is my child's health (life) worth only $970, alousy video camera, and a goddam tshirt? the lack of appreciation for life on this planet increasingly makes me want to vomit. anyone who volunteers for this "project" is karmically fuct. the children are our future, yo.
I got a bad rep point for stating that I don't think they should do this testing in another thread about it. (go figure, bad karma because I don't think pesticide testing should be done with children) I think it's because I criticized even the EPA's lack of facts in their fact sheet. Essentially they cover some broad basics but don't get down to brass tacks. I just plain don't like the idea and I think it's just a way for the producers of pesticides to see how close to the line they can get before they cross it.
i agree with pear tree. this is so SICK! Why are people not understanding how horrible this is on so many levels. it blows my mind.
Only one "class" of people live in the area they want to study here. It is a very poor area. I know that doesn't mean the people there are homogenous and I have nothing against that area, in fact, I live in a similar kind of neighborhood in a neighboring town. Also, NE Florida is VERY segregated. That particular area is mostly inhabited by African Americans. If they were looking to get a sample that is "representative" of the general population, this is not it. Knocking on doors in only one area will never give a broad sample. Obviously, North America has a very diverse population, in terms of ethnicity and wealth, and a more representative sample could be made by including a broader area. However, I also think that many people of different "classes" would not see a video camera and less than $1000 as much of an incentive when there are many drawbacks. I don't mean to rant, but I am very concerned about this study. I am not convinced that participants will be well informed and, to me, that means they will not be entirely safe.
First off , i don't see were you ranting. I want to see this from a diffrent perspective ..it may look a bit distorted for me all these thousands of miles away, so i appreciate what your saying. I just read into it saying 'don't do anything more or less than you already do' 'we want to see if your risking your health through your own choices' and what risks these are in the grand scheme of things. .. It might even be that this sample represent the average citizen (regardless of their ethnicity or social standing) in some way, thinking about it but i am not sure ?. I hope they are and it would be quite informative to speak with participants.. If they came knocking on your door would you take part having read over the information ?. why (if you don't mind me asking).
Honestly, it would take a lot of information to get me to participate in an extended study. Just in general, I am not one to complete surveys and the like. I am not against studying the effects of pesticides. I believe that if handled correctly, with community involvement, people could be well-informed and safe. Unfortunately, I don't think that has been the case this time.
No i don't think i would be up for it either...seems far too long . Though it takes a long time to make any relevant conclusions ?. If a american goverment person came to my house i think i would panic , but not with a British goverment person... i think i trust them more ... its just a question of perception . To many dodgy american films i think. It can't be like the circus is in town though . It would become a big deal and the results i am sure would be skewed. People well informed , yeah i do hope they are .. The EPA website is not exaustive but i think this would confuse ...i hope they are giving the participants good info.. I do think the organic consumers association have a not so hidden agenda though .. of course they would jump on anything like this , this is why i am not overly frightened to be honest .
