I would like to get dread in a few months, but I wanna start looking for someone to do them for me, know of anyone in san diego please lmk. I would like the backcombing way. My hair is around 9" long from the top, trying let it grow for a few more months.
If a friend does it I want her/him to know what they're doing though. Captain Cannabis, don't say that dude, it makes me wanna gette'm already! EDIT:forgot to ask, would the dreads be pointing up if I get them now? I don't want that.
do em now, waiting months is just longer your not gunna have nice dreads. and get a friend, after the first few they will get the hang of backcombing really well and can go back to the early ones to make them tighter. as far as the salon goes, its a serious waste of money, search this forum for the salon done dreads, they are all HORRIBLE!!! usually get taken out and redone at home. salondreads are a scam, and a waste of $$$ and they will point up for a little bit, wear a hat, they fall fast. frizzy mess at first, only a few days though
Hey man 9 inches is more than enough. The earlier you start the quicker you get out of the shitty looking stage. I'd say do 'em ASAP.
that's it man, im doing them this weekend, I just need someone to section my hair, and someone to backcomb the back, would it be best to do it with a flea comb I already have dr bronners shampoo too..
Yeah, that's the best. Plastic combs will either break or just do a shitty job. The metal ones for dogs are the way to go.
I think you should consider going natural(neglect) and just letting your hair dread up. Also, you mentioned that you hope whoever does your dreads does them good or something.. It doesn't really matter how 'good' they are backcombed your hair dread up anyway. so dont worry and just be happy that you're starting a journey,.. or something like that
They will only look good for about a week. Then they will unravel a bit and it's just gonna look like messy hair for a month or two no matter what you do. In the end it's always worth it though.

By the way the first time you wash them you'll probably be dissapointed. But don't worry it happens to everyone.
"Hey man 9 inches is more than enough." That's what he said. :cheers2: Nah man, you should start now, and post pics too
I already tried the neglect method, but I used to workout a lot and I always had to atleast wet my hair, and it just looked very dirty, I only lasted 4 months. I got a couple dreads now that I did myself, how long is it best to wait before washing my hair? I've been washing my hair like one day, then skip a day, wash it the next, etc for about 9 months, so hopefully that helped my scalp produce less oil. Im also wearing a tam too, im gonna try to leave it on most of the time, except for when I sleep cause it falls off.
It's gonna look dirty and shitty. Well maybe not dirty, but it's gonna look shitty as hell. It will only last for a month or two. You'll get really thin dreads at first but if you don't touch them they'll join up. Just rip them apart if you don't want them too big. Mine were thin when I did them earlier this month but now I can see that their slowly attatching to one another.
so how long should I wait before washing my hair? I haven't washed like in 3 days, im almost done with all my hair, I can prolly get like 4 more dreads out of the hair that's left.
http://www.knottylocks.tk/ its a bible of dread tips man....just warning you to read the forums before posting a question that has probably been answered 30 times or they will gut you like a fish (not really that uptight) really friendly community of dreadheads. and...listen to these guys too 6 to 9 inches is perfect for dreadies my hair was about 15 to 16 inches and it took much longer because of it..but thats for backcombing.. biggest advice is after you get them....watch out for the wax..
