Im really starting to get into this group as of late. when I was younger I thought all they were was just an angst metal group with screaming lyrics... they do have some good melodies in there. any pantera fans out there?

I used to be in a Pantera/Metallica cover band called Metal Militia. I used to listen to both of them. Used to being the operative phrase there. lol They are pretty much angst driven. I mean, Cemetary Gates and Floods both have a fair amount of technicality and O.K. melodies, but the rest of their music is pretty anger driven. I can't listen to music about beating someone's head in anymore. Phil Anselmo's in a new, shittier band now, so I guess next to Down, and Super-Joint Ritual, Pantera is pretty good.

Pantera is a good band, but I would agree, angst-driven. Alot of people tend to compare them to AC/DC, and I'd take AC/DC over them anyday, content-wise and melody-wise.

I don't know how you could compare them to AC/DC, I mean, even in thier early glam metal days they weren't power rock or anything similar to blues based. They're a completely different breed. You'll never beat Angus and Malcolm on the guitars and Bonn's work on thier earliest albums. It's rock gold.

I wouldn't truly compare thm either, but you see the common Metallica- AC/DC- Pantera - Sepultura - Iron Maiden comparisons.

I would pick Sepultura out as the best overall from all of those, just because of the wonderful diversity of sound.

Well, I think Dickenson's lyrics were a lot better than Cavalera's. I mean, "Alexander the Great" and the "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" were great lyrics. I think the primitive sound of Sepultura was cool for their first few songs. And by the time Soulfly came along, it was certainly old.

Dickinson did much better in his solo carrier... Tears of the Dragon, and other songs of the album are just amazing.

Iron Maiden has some of the worst lyrics in thier most popular songs. When comparing ands on such a broad level, I tend to focus on the popular songs; it would be rather imposible to compare bands such as this when focusing on thier experimental side.

I suppose. Dickenson's solo career is amazing. I have The "Chemical Wedding" and it's pretty good. Paul Dianno's lyrics were shit. I can't stand thier first album at all. I think "Hollowed be thy Name", a very famous song, had pretty good lyrics.

Nothing beats a Dime solo? How about a Vinnie Moore solo? How about a John Petrucci solo? How about a Steve Vai solo? I think those beat a Dimebag solo any time man. lol Kirk's only real impressive work and fairly difficult work was on the Justice album, and even that I could cop at age 15.

steve vai is all flash and technicality and no emotion. I tried to get into his stuff and he is way too pretentious for me.

And,... Dimebag has emotion? lol Um, no, he really doesn't, nor does he have any technical prowess. Listen to a song called "For the Love of God" by Steve Vai. That's some real, raw emotion right there. He can play any style, with any amount of emotion or technicality that he chooses at that moment. I suppose practicing 14 hours a day, spending 6 years in Berklee and 3 years in Guitar Institute might be the reason for this ability.

Have you ever heard Steve or Vinnie's sound? Dime is not the best on any level, I mean, even if Steve died, and Vinnie died, on the same damned day, Dime and Kirk would still be walking that line of mediocrity. I don't know how Kirk would be defined as a "God", I mean, as a guitar player? As a musician? As an influence on music? Maybe on that latter you could have something. He's a God in the metal world. Dave Mustaine could still play those songs better, with 1 finger, and an arm tied behind is back, as could Marty Friedman. Opinions, opinions, yeah?

I didnt say dimebag had emotion either. all his stuff is mainly power chords.

when I think of emotional guitar players, stevie ray vaughn comes to mind.

Stevie Ray, yes... good ear food. He was really emotional, but very repetitive in terms of phrasing. But, still one of my favorites.

I dont like any of the members of G3...... vai, malmsteen, or satriani. they are all flash..... I dont get any emotion out of their stuff. Im just not a guitar player. I think most people that really get into them are usually guitar players themselves.
