I'm sure all of you have seen reality shows, and several of them always have their homosexual characters...

As of now, two shows that I know of hold gay and lesbian contestants.

In SURVIVOR: Vanuatu, Scout Cloud Lee AND Ami Cusack are both lesbians in committed relationships...They still remain in the game, with 9 out of 18 people left.

The new "Real World" series in Philadelphia has TWO gay contestants, Willie and Karamo...

Anyone here who has been watching them or have any other reality shows to mention with gays and lesbians?

I find Ami in SURVIVOR to be pretty femi-nazi in a villainous way, and she might be going soon...Scout is very well respected, being the eldest at 60 years.

Willie in Philly (Heh, it rhymes) has quite a friendly and outgoing attitude, while Karamo is like Willie's complete opposite as far as the gay sterotypes go...

I don't watch TV (literally never, don't own one) but I have heard about all that good news. I figure that even if reality shows are shit entertainment, at least the masses of people who watch them are being exposed to GLB(T?) figures and relationships. Survivor's well-thought-out, at least. That's the vibe I get. I've honestly never seen it, but from everything I've heard, it's not as stupid as the newer stuff.

Maybe I'll watch at a friend's house or something to see this Cloud you speak of.

society can't ignore a huge peice of it's population forever. even in a genre that seems to be rotting the brain of our society.

From what I've seen of homosexuals on reality TV, they act like horrendous two dimensional stereotypes and generally do rather well as a result. So I'm not sure how to feel about it. It doesn't do much for me, I don't feel I particularly conform to those stereotypes, and it gets tedious when yet another dumb girl finds out I don't own any Cher records and looks really disappointed. My record collection is fucking sacred!

One reality TV show that IMHO that certainly doesn't do any good for GLBT especially the T is TBS's He's A Lady None of the contestants claim to be cross dressers before coming into this & as a matter of fact everyone goes out of the way to say otherwise. I watched it once & One of the judges constantly made comments about so & so being an ugly woman, When one contestant got kicked off he gave him a cigar & congratulated him alluding that he was the one who earned the most respect. When they took these guys* out into the streets they seemed to go out of their way to record the negative, cliche`, or laughing public reactions. All this show seems to do is support the notion that a man who dares present himself as female is fodder for ridicule & derision.

*I didn't refer to these guys with female or neutral pronouns because IMHO they haven't earned it nor do they deserve it. In fact they themselves don't seem to want it.

Reality shows can't help but look good compared to so much of what's out there. Many other shows don't have any openly gay people on them. The "let's you and him fight" variety of talk shows such as Jerry Springer provide such a negative view of everybody that almost anything looks good.

I find that I've been happier since I stopped watching so much television. I'll watch the Weather Channel before I go out in the morning and a few things on PBS during the week. Sundays are set aside for football in season and maybe Sixty Minutes.

Both are what I would consider Reality TV & both are good shows IMHO. Both are good sources of practical knowledge & an aid to learning engineering concepts.

I also like the Food Network & I suppose by some stretches the cooking shows could be considered reality but it is different.....

Naturally, most reality shows are negatively influencial and a bunch of crap, because editors and producers are going crazy over only entertainment and what would look good for the cameras, that sometimes it looks ridiculously unrealistic...

However, I watch a few reality shows not only for entertainment purposes, but because the human interaction between other humans fascinates me...Even in life, I tend to sit back and observe those around me and how they interact with eachother...

SURVIVOR has been there for a while before reality TV became a fad, and the whole idea of the game interests me...

Real World has been there for a LONG time, so it has its interesting and original moments, although lately they tend to cast people who are camera whores...

Lets see...About two episodes ago on SURVIVOR, one tribe (Yasur) won a reward where they received letters from loved ones...There was a nice clip of Scout talking about her relationship with Annie, her partner at home. Usually when there are about 6 people left in the game, a loved one from home will visit them, so I'm assuming that if Scout or Ami(I don't think Ami will go that far) are in the Final 6, there might be more footage on her lifestyle with her partner.

The "Real World" fundamentally focuses on their lives, so there has been a ton of portrayals of the gay lifestyle whenever there are gay rommates...

I created a topic like this to see how you guys respond towards the homosexual lifestyle portrayed on TV...I don't think its all negative and bullshit...

I haven't watch the Real World in a while, but the only "positive" gay guy was the one from the New Orleans setting. Most of the others have all been drama queens, heavy on drama.

I have never watched any of Survivor, Big Brother or the rest of the ilk. In general, TV makes gays look abnormal .. yanno the stereotypical limp wristed, lispy talking, swishy walking homo... and yes I am gay.

Yeah, I loved Danny from New Orleans, but not all people on reality shows are the typical gay stereotypes...

But then again, you also gotta realize the fact that reality shows base sterotypes in order to create diverstiy...

    Get.

    H

    B

    O.

The shows I can think of off the top of my head include: Six Feet Under, Queer As Folk, Metrosexuality (did this go stateside?), Messiah, Tinsel Town.

All those shows have included homosexual characters who are not complete stereotypes. Six Feet Under does an excellent job of conveying aspects of homosexual culture that are normally overlooked. There's always going to be shows that use the polar stereotypes (mincing weirdo on one side, gothic depressed fuckups on the other), but there are definitely those making an effort to see homosexuality gain wider acceptance and understanding.

Talk shows like Jerry Springer are completely staged anyway....I believe Jerry admitted that, too....

On the contrary, they use stereotypes to imply diversity where, in truth, all they want is to expand their audience demographic.

That said, there could be any number of homosexuals on these shows who don't conform to the stereotypes and we just never know. Like on Big Brother: if someone doesn't mention their sexuality and doesn't have sex on the show, how would you know?

Last Winter I saw a show called Cowboy U that had a bunch of people most of which were "city folk" who were at a cowboy camp. It was as stupid as any other of these shows but there was a gay guy who aside from the narrator talking about it when or him talking about how he was proud to be a gay from (I think it was) New York out cowboying up (they liked that term)with the rest no one made much of it. There was some bit of apprehension by some of the others because they all slept in the same bunk house but it was somewhat downplayed, I would say.

Most of the gay guys I have seen on television are very flamboyant. Everything I have seen has been generally steriotypical.

Pretty much everything you see on mainstream is a stereotype though. They probably found that the mincing homo stereotype demographic appealed to more than any other, so they aimed for that one.

It's the same reason you hardly ever see any non-sassy black women on TV.

    your correct selfcontrol.

Its probably easier for American viewers to see a "homo" as a limp wristed, lispy talking guy than a 6'9" 350 lb American football player as being gay. It is in their mindset on what a gay guys is supposed to be/look like and they play to that stereotype. Many of the gays I have met haven't pegged me for being gay, not that I try to hide it.

Look how long it took for "TV" women to be something other than a stay-at-home mom who takes care of the kids and has dinner on the table when hubby gets home stereotype.
