i got my thyroid removed and i've been on medicine since then but i am not one to take medicine really... so it's the only one i was taking. since i stopped taking it a gained weight quickly and i'm wondering if anyone knows if the weigh gain will stop
i just had a friend who die of a heart attack; she was 38. 3 years ago she had her thyroid gland removed. she stopped taking her thyroid replacment hormone, and gained about 200 pounds. she had no heart or blood pressure problem before she stopped taking the replacment hormone. i have known several women, who have stop their replacment hormone after having their thyroid's removed. all of them gained weight; not just gained weight... they all became land whales. 2 of them died of heart related problems due to their weight. i have no ideal what happen to the other women.
yeah raz. I think your going to get huge, if you dont take them.. Theres nothing wrong with being a big girl, but the health issues that may surface from that may impact you alot differently. consider buying new clothes as a added expense with a limited income..
I have hypothyroidism and I gain weight quickly if I do not take medicine. It can also cause you to feel very tired all the time. You can lose weight if you take medicine and increase your activity with something like 10 minutes of jumping jacks daily or bike riding.
raz...i know i said that my love would be for eternity but i now feel that a disclaimer regarding your weight gain is in order as i prefer to not go out with land whales....please start takin the meds asap or i will have no other choice but to fire you
I have an autoimmune thyroid disease, and an almost-non-existent thyroid now after years of getting destroyed by my body. I was diagnosed when I was 12, and have been living with a severely under active/inactive thyroid for 13 years. Your thyroid plays a huge part in your life, in creating hormones, in your body, in your metabolism, weight, sleep patterns, mood stability, hair, nails, skin, depression, pain, energy, motivation, clarity of thought (and lack there of) memory, ability to focus, etc. The medication that they give you, is thyroid replacement. Either synthetic (Synthroid) t4, or natural (Armour) dissected pig thyroid. Not having any thyroid at all, and not taking your medication, means that you aren't getting any of those thyroid hormones, and it will wreck havoc on you, and your body. Not only will you gain weight, but you will have a non-existent metabolism, which means eating "normal" amounts for other people, will make you gain weight, and it will be next to impossible to lose it. And beyond the aesthetics of being fat or thin (Which in comparison is a non concern) compared to how absolutely shitty you will feel all the time. Thyroid hormone is not an optional "medication" like anti-depressants, or anti-inflammatorys. Its pretty much life or death, you will continue to get worse, you will continue to feel awful, and you will continue to get more and more health problems. I wasnt so great about taking my medication as a teenager, and I still have moderate symptoms that never go away on t4/synthroid, and I have been begging my HMO to prescribe my Amour. It is an uphill battle, and no one will fight it for you. You can either take your medication, and take an active part in living a healthy life, or you can roll over and wait to die. You wont be able to work for long shifts without getting exhausted. Exercise becomes too hard, standing starts to hurt, you may develop fibromyalga (Like I have), diabetes, or a whole host of issues (like heart disease and death) and can look forward to life in a wheel chair. I suggest that you pick up the book "Living well with hypothyroidism" it has a great list of foods you should eat/avoid, supplements, work out regimes, and general information for you to better understand your new situation. Good luck, and skipping on your hormone replacement is really something I would STRONGLY suggest against. Take it the same time every day, like the minute you wake up in the morning, about 1.5 hours before you eat breakfast. Just have water and your pills next to your alarm clock or something so you cant forget.
i have underactive thyroid and have had it since birth i am currently having problems with my meds as the docs are having trouble getting it right so i have been feeling really tired and a bit breathless for a few days and a bit bad tempered i am on 175mg at the moment but there is no way i would consider not taking any meds if my body required it i am not one for taking other tablets such as pain killers but i know i have to take the thyroxine
There seem to be a variety of thyroid problems from hyperthyroidism, hyperthyroidism, cancer/tumors and even anatomical issues...
damn you guys i didn't know until now anyone posted this, i'm not trying to gain 200lbs and die, fuck!
Please please please please take your medication! A healthy thyroid gland is pretty much essential to good health. That's why non fermented soy products are so unhealthy. A compromised thyroid gland means a compromised metabolism and a compromised metabolism means weight gain, chronic fatigue and eventually severe malabsorption of nutrients.
yeah the meds are just pretty expensive i've already gained weight i've noticed it definatly but now you guys scared me into thinking i'm going to gain even MORE so i will have to make an appointment with my doctor and scrounge up the money thanks
you can get back on the meds, then lose the weight i suppose...that would be the healthiest. i'm not gonna ramble about diet and exercise though...i'm too much of a fatass
I think that its disgusting that your doctor cut your thyroid out of your body and didn't even explain to you that you HAVE to take thyroid medication for the rest of your life. but then again, how could you let them preform a major, life altering surgery on you without knowing all of the information?
alright thanks guys i get the point i'm a fatty now and need to go get meds again until my insurance runs out
Some health food stores sell a product called Raw Thyroid. I use it and it works as good as the prescription stuff. It's only 20 bucks.
I would recommend taking a dessicated adrenal gland along with your thyroids (as well as any other endocrine glands you can get your hands on) They all work together and if you're just helping your thyroid you may be stressing your adrenal glands. Get reading.
