I've got a fairly fat dread that I want split in two. I've had them for one year and I left my ends loose I was thinking maybe just splitting it slowly... little by little... from the end to the root, so it doesn't fall apart and can keep dreading... Who's got any ideas or opinions on this?!
opinions are secondary, if you want to do it, go for it. As far as methods... take a rip, then take a rip if you get my meaning. If it's on the back of your head it's usually easier to have someone else do it for you. Did they used to be two? I'll say one thing, if you can't get it down all the way to the scalp they're just going to recombine again. Once you get it split put a bead on there or something for a few days so the roots don't start to combine again.
I have some that i have been wantin to split but im not too sure I've ripped one apart starting at the roots well actually two i had to cut a small section at the ends to get them completely apart edit: I'm high so i forgot to also say that they were on the back of my head and someone else had to cut them but i was the one that ripped them at the root. they are perfectly fine and still dreading awesomely
funny, im tryin to congo a few of mine, he tryin to split.. looks like no one is happy with their locks round here...hehe
I went to visit a friend I don't see often and the back of my head was turning into a beaver tail. She convinced me that she had to split a few of em and that I'd be thanking her later. At the time, I didn't think it was necessary, but she had very long locks for a long time so I trusted her judgment. Now, a few weeks later I'm really glad she split them. Because they were in the back of my head I couldn't really understand how bad they were getting. Now, I still have fat dreads back there, but the rest of the process is continuing on nicely. I feel like my dread energy is all sorted out. There are definitely situations to rip and situations not to rip, it all really depends.
on another note i split mine because they were 2+ inches wide and flat and uncomfortable if it isn't flat i wouldn't mess with it
I recently just combed one out, that was huge. Granted, mine werent very far along, and it was so large, that it was having a hard time locking, so it wasnt bad, but I imagine if you use conditioner or something, you could comb it out with minimal trouble, and just seperate and re-dread your 2 new sections. That big one was really my only complaint and now I am way more satisfied.
