Ask people to take a standard sheet of paper and divide it into 4 equal sections/boxes. Then ask them to list what they think should be in each box.

In each section/box place these headings:

    1. ABSOLUTE NEEDS TO KEEP YOU ALIVE

    2. WANTS THAT DIRECTLY SUPPORT YOUR ABSOLUTE NEEDS

    3. WANTS THAT SUPPORT YOUR BASIC NEEDS AND PRODUCE ACCEPTABLE POLLUTION

    4. WANTS THAT DRASTICALLY POLLUTE YOUR NEEDS AND ARE COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY AND WASTEFUL

This will make individuals realize what their lifestyle contributes to pollution and the effect it has on future generations.

Perhaps, but many people are so disconnected from the process of manufacturing and such they have no concepts of the pollution that is being caused. For most people, all they see is the end product w/ no idea about how that product was created. I like tv shows that focus on how stuff is made, but I think there should be more emphasis on the effects on the environment and waste products that are created.

    Peace and love

Veggie-oil powered cars/machines/buses/trucks, less plastics, or less Walmarts and THOUSANDS of more recycling places, less glass used for sure, have greener factories or shut them down, make it manditory that schools have recycling bins for glass, paper, plastics, and metals, and other public buildings, get rid of fossil fuels and use them ONLY as a plan B, things like that. Hydroelectricity. No Nuclear power shit - that's wayyyy dangerous.

Not so fast. The agriculture that produces these oils is an extremely environmentally destructive, polluting endeavor. It makes sense to reuse all waste oil from fryers and stuff this way, but that is a very limited amount. I think hydrogen is the best because it is simply a form of propelling vehicles with electricity (electricity and water are all that is required to produce hydrogen), but without batteries full of toxic chemicals. Cars could be powered by wind, solar, or other clean energy.
Hydroelectricity is extremely environmentally damaging. It destroys the ecosystems of rivers by making once fast-flowing rivers into basically lakes and preventing fish from swimming upstream to spawn. Nuclear power, on the other hand, doesn't contribute to global warming and releases much less radioactivity than coal power plants under normal circumstances. The potential for disaster is great, but global warming and widespread mercury pollution as caused by coal power plants is pretty disastrous in itself. It's sad to think this way, but one of the best havens for wildlife in Europe is the Chernobyl radiation zone considered too radioactive for people to live in.

Hydrogen is not the be all and end all. To acquire hydrogen fuel you still need electricity. And guess what! As with all processes, you need more electrical energy fed in than the potential energy in the hydrogen created. The nasty chemical batteries are in some cases more efficient than hydrogen in terms of the amountof energy you get out compared to the energy in. The only advantage Hydrogen has over batteries is that per unit mass (and possibly volume, dont quote me on that) it contains more energy than a battery of equivelant mass or volume. Hydrogen is not a viable fuel as such, however it is a viable energy storage device that will allow your car to go further than an equivalent battery, and with easier recharge (a minute with a hose as opposed to several hours with a plug). Lets not forget it has a habit of going boom though. Some batteries do also, but not as spectacularly generally.

In the short term hydro power is also poor for the atmosphere. For every kilo of concrete you pour to build your dam, you get around a kilo of carbon dioxide emitted. Dont think also that nuclear power is safer either. Over the last 50 years or so there have been many dam failiures resulting in loss of life, and only a single major nuclear disaster resulting in significant and widespread death and destruction. I'm not trivialising it, but Chrenobyl was special in that it was a Soviet era nuclear reactor specifically designed to produce weapons grade material, with electricity as an accidental bi product. These reactors were not especially safe, and on the day of the disaster the operators were playing sillybuggers anyhow. I believe all of the specific class of reactor that failed at Chernobyl to be now out of service, and only a very few Soiet era reactors are still going. Modern nuclear reactors are extremely safe beasts specifically made to produce electricity and little else. There are nuclear incidents about the place regularly, usually leaks or such, but usually not at the reactor but in disposal, and not as severe as a dam failiure above a populated area.

Personally I see tidal power, geothermal power, and to a lesser extent, solar power to be the only truly reliable renewable energies. The former is intermittent, but you can gurantee that for all hours of the day but when the tide is on the turn, generators such as this. The issue is that not all countries have coastlines, and fewer have an abundance of tidal flows poerful enough to warrant hundreds of those babies. Geotermal power is similar. It is pretty much constant in places like Iceland, so is probably superb for them, but not so good for others who dont live on such volitile land. Solar power is inefficient, and in many places the sun dosent shine reliably.

I see a future where much of the world is powered by solar, wind, and other sources depending on the blessings of their particular location. When the sun shines, or the wind blows, power will be sent to the people. When there is overproduction in energy, the excess is used to produce Hydrogen (Iceland does this now, Rekjavik's busses are all run on hydrogen produced when their powerstations are overproducing), when the forces of nature are insufficient to power the masses, stored hydrogen is used to make up the difference. The other produced hydrogen is used to power transport and industry.

In a two years or so, I will hopefully be designing future airliners. There is no engineering reason why these planes cannot be built to be fueled on hydrogen. It is true that their range will be reduced, and that development will be expensive, but I believe I will see it happen before too long.

most of the persons reading these posts are looking for small things that they can do in their everyday lives....if you ARE planning on buying a used car to get to work/whatever, check out what kind of emissions it gives off...

I have read a lot of posts on this site about how much ppl love their old VWs. These vehicles look cool but they can emit up to and even more than 100X the emissions of a modern vehicle.

Now you should always weigh the impact of destroying an old car vs. building a new car......but 100X is probably over the limit by almost anyone's metric....:toetap05:

How many of you people take re-cycling seriously??-- We have been trying to get this message across for decades now- -
Plastics just thrown into the garbage is a distaster

The trash vortex is an area the size of Texas in the North Pacific has an estimated 12lbs of plastic for every 1 lb of natural plankton, along with other slow degrading garbage, swirling slowly around like a clock, choked with dead fish, marine mammals, and birds who get snared. Some plastics in the gyre will not break down in the lifetimes of the grandchildren of the people who threw them away.
A sad commentary on something we could be doing something about- -At 60 yrs old ,I keep doin my small part- - Im sure you guys that are are a bit younger dont want a fucked up planet (any more than it already is)- to raise your kids in. I remember going to the beaches and rivers in my teens and older , it was a whole different scene. I live down the shore in NJ now- and what I see just down -by the bay- - is very distressing .

If you think these politicans give a shit or passing any envirormental laws is high on thier agendas - -well we know that bullshit

Just saying....a little awarness and a little help- -ya know??

If ya can make some time- -get involved or a least re-cycle- every little bit helps.
