and they are only a couple years old..

WTF is wrong with people that give their dogs all kinda of shit human foods thats no good for them?

One my friends has these little dogs, they are only a couple years old..
They have kids too, that I dont think realize the damage they are doing to the dogs.. Giving them candy and cakes, food from mcdonalds, ice cream whatever..

You can hear the dogs wheezing when they walk and can see major fat on them, some leg problems cause the tiny dogs is carrying alot of weight around.. I dont think these dogs should be over 7-9lbs but they are close to 14-18lbs.. weighing more or close to the 12lb sledgehammer I had today.
I told them they was killing the dogs with kindness, and just cause it makes you happy to give them food and they likes the shit.. Dont mean its good for them. They arent going to give you much happiness in the long run.

do you think this is abuse of some sort?

It is abuse for sure. When I was working at the SPCA the animal cops took a dog away (named pilsbury) who was 12 lbs over weight (and he was a pug!). They used that exact same term "killing him with kindness" and the courts handed him over to us.

I do think it's abuse - and I like the term "killing them with kindness" because the people who do this aren't intentionally TRYING to kill their dog.

This frustrates me. I watched my grandma overfeed a Lhasa & a Himalayan to early graves. I was just a kid at the time & couldn't do that much about it, but it left a lasting impression on me to see two beautiful pets become fat slobs, and then die young. Now, when I see this and have the chance I'll say something.

i think its akin to other forms of ignorant abuse and i dont think its unreasonable for the spca or whatever to remove super fat dogs from their owners to protect them.
my friend had a very active 1 year old dog who she decided to give to her grandma (who had recently put to sleep a very overweight border collie). within months, that poor dog was close to double her original girth and is apparently even fatter now. she also never gets walks or outings. her grandma loves that dog, but shes killing it and that really isnt fair.

My friend adopted a beagle that was just freakin huge. Even it's tail was fat. That thing was weezing and snorting everywhere it waddled to. While they weren't the ones that made the dog fat, they didn't do anything to help it get better after they got him.
My dogs get spoiled as hell, but they are fit and healthy. They are extremely active and get plenty of excersise. One of my dogs is just straight muscle. They are some gorgeous boys.

i should add that i feed my dog human food allll the time. not burgers and shit, but pieces of whatever im eating and leftovers that no one wants anymore. i make full use of him as a food disposal and its great because i never have a problem of what to do with old food. he has stubborn little lovehandles but hes not fat and is in very good shape otherwise. hes almost 9 and can run full tilt for hours after squirrels, beside my bike, or just for shits. he acts like hes 2.
i dont have a problem with dogs getting people food and its never been a problem for my dog. obvioulsy it is for some dogs, probably when combined with insufficient excercise. but if you have an active dog and dont take it out to run, its going to get fat no matter what you feed it.

I think that it's definitely abuse, just like I think a parent letting their child get obese is child abuse, they can't have a say, they don't know better but we DO and if you have a pet you should damn well devote yourself to taking care of them PROPERLY! Humans domesticated animals so it's out RESPONSIBILITY to give them proper care.

I have nothing against dogs getting people food once in a while (too frequently even if the dog is fit and healthy causes begging or staring at people while they eat which makes me sick) but as long as you keep on top of your pet's health then it's ok

My ex's family had an overweight black lab who was the only dog from her litter of puppies still alive, she had hip displaysia and had a hard time climbing stairs or getting in the van! and what did they feed her? weight control dof food topped off with leftover gravy or whatever was for supper that night...
It DISGUSTED me to watch that poor dog get fed. poor thing, she slept on her back because that's how she was comfortable! her hips wouldn't let her lie any way else!

I feel really strongly about it... also because my sister was a small kid but by the time she was 10 she weighed more than me and I'm almost 8 years older than her and an average 120-130 lb girl.

I feel people don't take their important responsibilities seriously enough.

my dogs get scraps sometimes but they are always playing with each and running i never feed them candy or junk food i think thats just wrong.

i do give them meat and veggies tho and if we have ribs and the bones are big enough i will let them have the bones

they mainly eat dog food tho

but yes feeding a dog until it is obese is completely wrong

Same thing with a lack of excersize, not only does the animal get fat, it gets neurotic to boot. Anybody who watches Cesar Milan knows that the lack of activity gives rise most behavioral problems. I used to be a dog groomer, and fat dogs (especially the little guys) are the majority. :piggy:

I truly believe that if a person accepts the responsibility of being a guardian for the life of another living thing, then the should educate themselves as to the proper care and feeding of their critters, which is only common sense and basically, the right thing to do in the scheme of things.

By the way, I really like this quote...

"The best feelings are those that have no words to describe them..."

I think the situation is more complex than what's right or wrong in concept.

Like with the obsesity problems of children today it's more a question of people working the candle at both ends and not having time to doing anything that is really right. People don't have quality time for their pets or kids anymore.

Then you also have to consider with livestock husbandry they have a term: easy kept for horses, cattle other livestock. Some just thrive and maintain with little or no real consideration. Others like some of our pets and children need more one on one and quality time. Problem is we just don't have it any more. And some of us can't afford to hire dieticians, nannies and trainers.

I know my BillyBob while I was working seven days a week spent his days laying on the back of the couch watching for me to come home out the front window. I never fed him scraps in fact I scaled his dog food way back to the amount you'd feed a dog a 1/3 his size. But his inactivity just layed the lbs on him.

His last couple of years my employer allowed me to bring him to work with me. He loved it, he lost weight he moved around. But by then he was 14 years old.

Was I a bad pet owner? I had to work to be able to buy the dog food. In order to do that I had to work seven days a week. I would rather have been home walking and playing with my dog.

And, not meaning to digress too far from the point, dog food in and of itself does not mean the food is appropriate for a dog, whatever its activity level.

We tend to cook extra for dinner, put small portions in for our dogs and top up with some kibble or wet stuff ... but we try to cook healthy meals for our dogs more than we feed them the processed stuff. Cheerios might taste good, but eating for evey meal doesn't seem balanced to me.

But we are fortunate to have a large dog run for the pups when we can't exercise them regularly.
