Laughter can be caused by joy, fear, shock, elation, anxiety...

    it releases emotions

(the essence of all emotions is the same)

I'm sorry but when you make remarks like that you just really sound like a pompous ass.

You know sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Your going to give yourself a brain bleed with that kind of thinking all the time.
Relax and enjoy a good comedy or something. ;)

    Again, pompous ass.

The problem is your trying to determine if another person is happy based on your point of reference. Chances are great that the other guy doesn't give a rats ass about your point of view, and their happiness is not dictated by the same criteria as yours.

I'm simply sharing my opinion on the true nature of what laughing really is.
Why do you feel the need to insult me? That seems to be the real problem.
As far as telling if another person is happy or not, really, it isn't that hard.

Some laughter is definitely out of insecurity, but it doesn't always have to be. Laughing after something bad almost happens to you is a sign of relief, which could be classified as insecurity.

I think that laughing at a funny joke that you understand is out of a very sudden onset of surprise/new information. If you see a joke coming then it is less funny, but you not laughing shouldn't detract from your insecurity.

This might be an impossible discussion :p Nobody really knows what's going on when you laugh, it could almost all be insecurity for some and none for others. Maybe even that's wrong haha, damnit.

The problem with that statement is you start by saying it's your opinion then go on to state it as an absolute.

A more appropriate statement would be "I'm simply sharing my opinion on what I feel the true nature of what laughing really is."

Language is very powerful and the subtleties can have profound effect on the meaning conveyed.
Maybe that is why I take issue with some of your statements, you are expressing your personal beliefs but phrase them as though they were concrete absolutes.
I'm an ass at times, but don't take it to heart

laughter is realization of the beautiful absurdity of existence...

it is an absurd response to an absurd experience.

Laughing is beautiful! When you let go of fear you can really laugh, you can really cry, you can feel true emotion not tainted by the ego.

A great meditation, laugh as hard as you can, then cry as hard as you can, then sit in complete silence. Do each act for about 15 mins. It works wonders, it penetrates so many layers.

you know what... this is starting to sound more and more correct... I thinkk I just sided with neodude. not 100% but now that I think of it SO much of the laughter I see people exhibit is out of insecurity/fear.

    :hat: (insecurity emoticon)

I think laughing is a stress reliever and a way to agree on nonsense

I believe emotions like fear, anger and jealously stemmed from basic instincts to help keep us alive as humans

It all connects to survival of the fittest; in caveman days we couldn't think in the way we do now and we relied on those emotions to keep us going strong
I believe that emotions like laughing, love, sadness and others are secondary and are related but not exactly necessary in the idea of survival of the fittest.

love is like a developed conscious bond between humans that stemmed from basic attachment so that couples would stay together as offspring grew
Sadness could be a counterpart to anger; inflicting pain inward

Laughing could be just that; a humor to relax and not take things too seriously, clear the mind of our worrisome thoughts

When observed id say laughing is easily one of the best ways to break the ice, so id say insecurity over fear....Because how does fear get thrown into the mixture of happiness and laughter? lol

... so is crying ... but laughing makes the world brighter, and more translucent, and visible for what it is > a grand illusion.

Laughing is the best medicine ever !
