Do you get constant noise from ambulance/fire engine/police sirens where you live?

This seems to be a problem that permeates across the entire length and breadth of the UK. No matter where you are, at some point in the day, usually about every 2 hours on average, there will the a siren going off.

    EMERGENCY! EMERGENCY!

Everyone stop what your are doing and panic, because there's an emergency.

How the fuck can there be so many bloody emergencies everyday, all the time!

You don't hear them at night, so I presume from that that emergencies only happen during the day time.

I know, I know, it is so they can navigate through traffic easily.

But does it have to be to fucking loud? Can they not turn the thing off when it's not necessary?

Or are they doing it on purpose to create a 'police state' atmosphere because they think that will make everyone jump into line?

Someone told me once that to have the siren so loud is actually counter productive, because it causes alarm and is so loud that drivers cannot discern which direction it is coming from.

I've lived in Europe for a few years, and you never hear these things so much. Holland is a far more densely populated country than the UK, so you'd expect there to be more sirens, but funnily you rarely hear them at all.

I HATE noise pollution, especially state sponsored noise pollution!

No, at night you hear the sodding helicopters - used to happen most nights when I lived in central London, and still a nuisance here in Brighton.

The volunteer fire Dept. in the burough I live in is the worst, that damn siren must go off at least 3 to 4 times every day, the way I reckon every damn house in the entire burough should have burned to the ground at least five times over by now, yet i never see any fires or smell any smoke, and sometimes the damn fire engine doesn't leave the station.. I think they just get their rocks off blowin the damn thing cause their just a bunch a drunks..

    Peace

Most siren noise is from Ambulences - the most used emergency service (as an emergency service - one you remove cops going to visit witnesses etc that doesnt require sirens). It's common sense (you'd think...) to want ambulences to be able to get through traffic as easy as possible, what with the whole life saving thing that they do.

Problem here isn't as much with sirens (though there are a fair few).
It's with the poxy police copter that flies over multiple times in a day/night.
Sometimes quite late as well, and quite low/closeby.
    It's really annoying and loud.

So far as I know, after a certain hour the emergency services do not use sirens (unless absolutely necessary) so as not to wake people. I'm sure there is most likely even more activity at times in the night than during the day; but if they aren't using sirens you wouldn't know.
