But I have had antibiotics recently which also contain gelatine. So I guess I am drawing the line with medicines. I have been vegetarian for around 7 years and I was vegan for 1 year and a half, and I have always been pretty strict about it, but when it comes to getting better I think I need to tone it down abit. What about you guys? If there is a pill or medicine that you need to take to get better but it contains some kind of meat or fish product, do you still take it? Thanks. Blessings xxx
They couldn't give you an antibiotic without gelatine? I don't think I myself would worry about that too much. If it bothers you, though, you should see if there is an alternative gelatine-free pill you could take.
I didn't even think about this until going gluten-free. Then I HAD to know what was in my prescriptions. I've found that most prescriptions do come in a gelatin-free version, and for those that don't there's usually an alternate drug out there that does the same thing. Sometimes they cost more though... I had a pharmacist ask if I HAD to have the gelatin-free version of one prescription because it was a difference of $60! (Most others have only been a dollar or two different) Asking about your options is free though so you can always ask & then make your decision! love, mom
Don't stress yourself about it. If I absolutely had to take something that included an animal product I would.
sometimes ya have to make exceptions for yourself. i used to be vegan and there came a point where i had to take supplements that were derived from fish and etc.. but it's for your health, ya know? it's okay eace:
If you cannot get around it, you should take it. I always ask for them gelatin free but if it isn't available then I open them or take the coating off.
Any medication that's approved by the FDA is tested on animals. I need certain meds to get by day to day, I won't apologize for that. Don't feel bad about stuff you can't control. You can't control the medical stuff that goes into your body, but at least you can control what food goes inside. That's how I look at it.
If its just the capsule you could open it up, put the powder in a drink and take it that way. (Also sometimes more pleasant for people who don't like swallowing pills) Personally I avoid taking pills unless it's absolutely necessary. A little herb goes a long way Also, just remember, you're not a bad person because you had a pill containing gelatine. The fact that you worry about something seemingly insignificant means that you really care, so don't get yourself down over it -Matt
It's about your principles, you decide right. It's about your health, principles or other reasons you don't eat animal products. I don't see why it would make you any less of a vegeterian, certainly not if you made your mind up about it. It's your decision.
It is inconvenient that so many drugs have gelatin in them, but i guess one has to draw a line somewhere. Like MetalGypsy said, you don't have control over it so don't sweat it. Health is really important.
