raves, neon colors, nightlife, celebrities, reality shows, consumerism. that is a pattern i see of this past decade. very sad.
Yeah. I forgot about language. A couple I've heard over the last ten years. "I'll be right back..." "It's Complicated..."
"I'll be right back.." This would also be known as "BRB". "It's complicated..." isn't something I'm familiar with in terms of abbreviation. But I think I just spoke that line tonight when I was having coffee with a bunch of my friends, LOL.
I didn't just mean text speak/abbreveations...I meant language in general. As far as BRB is concerned, I'm not sure wich one cam first BRB or "I'll be right back". The two e.gs I gave are more Americanisms, tbh. When I watch repeats of US TV shows, I here "I'll be right back" an awful lot. I'm not sure if it is a convinience for a charater to depart from the scene with out just wondering aimlessly off, or the hip young crowd say it and TV picked it up. "It's complicated is a little newer; It seems to have sprung from your - if you have one - Facebook status.
I never noticed the "I'll be right back" thing, save for computer slang. I didn't notice it wasn't common in the UK, nor did I notice it wasn't something used before 2000. Recently, walking through the mall I heard a group of young men checking their Facebook accounts on their phones, reading a message out loud which speculated on this one particular guy's ever-changing 'status'. He proceeded to explain to his friends why it was 'complicated'. Which leads me to... Technology following you everywhere, never being out of touch with the world.
I hadn't noticed it at all until I started to watch the Gilmore girls, and guaranteed, every episode somebody would say: "I'll be right back"... http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=i'll+be+right+back+gilmore+girls&meta= Then I started to notice it in other US shows... Once you start noticing something tiny, it seems to be everywhere. It definitely isn't common here.
I'm pretty certain it's always (relatively speaking) been used in this country. Perhaps it's more recently being used in Britain with our gaps being bridged through television and the internet. When I lived there I tended to notice what slang people did use, not what they didn't. So if it's not common there, maybe they thought I used that term a lot.
Oh, OK. That's interesting actually. I never thought much about "I'll be right back" in particular just because it seems to be one of those "ageless" phrases at least where I live. The "Complicated"... Oh yeah, I know that Facebook relationship status thing you're talking about! For that matter, we could also mention the sudden popularity of Facebook itself as one of the examples here too, lol. Anyway, getting back to the language, how about the word "amazing"? A lot of people seem to be using this word quite a bit these days.
since mobile facebook has exploded there is an uneasiness in society. many people in my area have deleted their myspace and facebook accounts. it was fun at first, but later we started to see facebook or twitter posts being featured on CNN.
It’s hard to believe now with my ultraportable intel core 2 duo processor (2.40 GHz) with 12.1 widescreen display; but back in the day I started computing on a PC 486/33 250 mb hard drive 10 inch CRT monitor 3 1/2 inch floppy drive 1 mg memory on Windows NT 3.1 Hotwater
You're right, I DID forget iPods. Mind you, I don't have one, so it's easy for me to forget about those, lol.
