I was watching that video on the chicks getting ground up at the hatchery in iowa. I've seen and read about the evils of the milk and egg industry before, but I was watching the video and i was just sick of it. Even if I do eat organic animal products, I always have a slight guilt in the back of my head. and I've always said that I've wanted to go vegan, but it was just extremely hard for me. Why not do it now?

But this is going to be really hard. So many of my favorite foods are dairy... well my favorite food is ice cream.. i dont think that will be terribly hard, but alot of other things will be hard to subsitute. like cheese? I mean i just like the basic cheddar and mozzerella cheese, nothing fancy. once i bought tofutti cheese, and it was the grossest thing i have ever eaten... does anyone know if the vegan cheeses are good?

what do you do when you have cravings? or was becoming vegan really hard, or easy?
    give me insight. :)

When I lived abroad being vegetarian was a lot easier but I'm finding being a vegan to be easier here in California where there are specialty stores. Big ones like Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Henry's and then little co-ops, even ones that are specifically raw vegan oriented.

Cheese? Sorry. It's crap. Maybe someone will know something that I don't. Hope so. The ice cream, though, I love. I'd rather eat vegan ice cream because it's equally delicious and I don't feel so bad afterwards. ;)

Good luck! I need it, too.

    aww, no cheese? bummer.
we already have vegan ice cream in the fridge

I don't think I'm gonna go all the way with the veganism. I'm not going to call myself a vegan (at the moment) I consume honey.. I got this awesome organic, raw, wildflower local honey. y'know, all of the good stuff. is there a word for someone who is not a vegan, but doesn't consume meat or dairy? That's what I'm gonna call myself. :)

That's probably the best. That way you're not tied down and you can take it slow. Pretty soon you might be able to proudly call yourself a vegan! I don't believe there's a word for that, specifically. Strange, with all terms (fruitarian, ovo-vegetarian, lacto-vegetarian) out there.

But if honey is the only non-vegan thing you consume I will say you're well on your way. And can I make a recommendation, which I just discovered myself? Agave nectar (some vegans use maple syrup as sweetener but, admittedly, it has a different taste). Honestly, dairy is the hard part. I see no reason to consume honey with this stuff around. :)

omg I forgot about agave nectar! yeah, maple syrup is icky. I've tried it in oatmeal, didn't like it. I've been using honey, it doesn't even have that honey taste, just taste like sugar!

my understanding is that when you say you're an ovo-veg, you're a vegetarian and you eat eggs and dont use milk? or is it that you dont use eggs and use milk? in the case of the latter I could say I'm an ovo-lacto veg...
or dietary vegan (for the most part now)

The prefix is what you do eat. So an ovo-lacto vegetarian eats eggs and dairy.

I have been slowly going vegan for 6 months now I think, it was so much better for me than to go cold turkey ('scuse the pun!)

Toffuti do good cheese spreads, the garlic and herb one is my favourite :) WIth the Cheezleys stuff, When I first tried it it was awful. But my bf's mum made some sandwiches with it and pickle, and his dad didn't notice!! I think the trick is to grate it and have it with something else, like pickle. I am also a sucker for mozzarella, I could sit and eat ball after ball xD but because I never drink milk anymore, the creaminess is starting to get sickening! I have slowly decreased my cheese intake, because I tried to stop it completely for a few days and I got cravings. So now I only have the cheese on pizzas and a little in my pasta every now and again :)

It is easy if you do it slowly : )

Instead of maple syrup, have you tried golden syrup? Its so yummy, and I prefer it to honey :)

I'd agree with Macca about the ice cream, I prefer vegan ice cream! Toffuti is a very good brand :)

    thank youu!
hm, I should have tried that too, but I am very bad at completeing a task over a certain period of time that is more than say... 2 days? 6 months wouldn't work out for me. hahaha
I haven't told either of my parents that I'm trying to go vegan, I'm just gonna do that when
I go to school, which will be shortly. There's a small natural food store thats only a 2 minute walk away, they have lots of vegan stuff! I even saw vegan butter >_> I love butter

But today I had an almost vegan day, except for the fact that I didn't know there was butter in the rice or dairy in my veggie burger... and I like honey in my oatmeal >_>
So far its been really easy.. but thats only because i first started out.. it was the same thing when I became vegetarian. Really easy at first, thne it got really hard.. one night I had pork, and I ate meat a few times. But now it's been a year and it's easy again
