Hi there, I found this [1] video showing some random apartment. I'm curious about the situation in Berkeley. Is the apartment at the lower or at the upper end of the scale in that area? Average? How much money do I need to rent such an apartment? Do you like that apartment? Regards Gyro [1] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIa-g2DS-7A
look at www.craigslist.org to get a good idea... it's a fairly expensive area to live. i lived in a tiny studio in 2001 and it was $1,000 a month... no heat or a/c .. the windows didn't close. the oven was too small to even put a pizza in. the kitchen was too small for anything but a kid table. no counter space. watched the vid.. it looks like that place what built by the same people that built the apartment i was in.. THATS THE OVEN! same tile in the kitchen and all.. i'd say thats roughly the size of the place i had too.
Yeah, B. up there has it correct, I'd say. The dude's apt. is in a nice location (obviously close to the UC campus), but gafs like those are going to be small (cramped), old (some stuff not working well - like the toilet or the stove, or the stuck windows - can get SO annoying), and EXPENSIVE. Minimum $1000/month, likely even more. Oftentimes students cram 3 or 4 people into a place that size. Housing near campus is hard to come by. BUT it is Berkeley and, well, there's just no place in the world like Berkeley.
Hi, I see, you liked it very much . If you make it true sometime and buy a bus you will live in much less space I guess. There seems to be an industry building that stuff. I've seen the interior furnishings they used in my former students' hostel in some hotels since then. Especially the miniature kitchens seem to be common. Imagine, after a long day you come to your hotel room and see the wellknown furniture. You feel at home instantly and.... hate it . I have to pay about 750 or 800 $US for my single apartment (no heat, no energy, no water) with 1.5 rooms. It's cheap for this area, but rather expensive compared with other areas. Families with children often have to spend 30 to 50 per cent and more of their income for rent. Three or four people in that space guaranties terror, doesn't it? Well, I've seen dorm room videos showing rooms with two or three people living in it. That is so different from the situation over here. If I have to leave this country sometime, I will come to Berkeley . Regards Gyro
Good morning, I'm in the south west of Germany, at the border of a so called 'technology region'. That and the relatively high quality of live (or what people meant as such) drives the costs of living here. But I like it . Regards Gyro
Thank you for your reply - so interesting. I was once in Germany, but only Frankfurt. I found the people, in general, so friendly and helpful and was surprisingly fond of the city.
Hi, Frankfurt is great... if you don't have to live in the city centre. I have some friends working in Frankfurt, but living in the outskirts. That looks like a good idea. Frankfurt is a little bit too big for me. Living in areas with about 100k population is fine. You have enough infrastructure and cultural offers there and you can be anonymous if you like. But 100k isn't big enough to get lost. My theory is that people in all areas are more or less friendly and helpful. Some might be shy or reserved. And, of course, there are village idiots in every area . Regards Gyro
Hey, My Fiancee and I got lucky and got a rent Controled place at Ashby and Shattuck for $550 electric and gas included. I spent a couple of months in the Neiderrhyne (I hope I spelled that right) I even played my first paying gig there. Peace Out, Rev J
Hello, that sounds cheap. Are walls and the ceiling included into that price ? In Germany? At the river rhine? Near the border to The Netherlands? Regards Gyro
Hello, jepp, this region is spelled 'Niederrhein' in german language, but it is pronounced similar to Neiderrhyne in english language. I was in Cologne, which is in the peripherie of this region, a few times. But I never was in Duesseldorf or in the other cities along this part of the river Rhine. It might be a great area, but I have to confess that I don't feel like I have missed something . The landscape might be too flat for me . Regards Gyro
I've heared that the Jazz Festival in Moers is supposed to be top notch. I saw the Berkeley mug in your album are you here now? Peace Out, Rev J
Hello, sorry, can't say anything about that Jazz Festival. But often smaller events are a blast. Might be true for the festival in Moers, too. Well, I never was in Berkeley. I had done them a favour or two and in return they send me a box with goodies. That's how I become the owner of Berkeley mugs, Berkeley shirts etc. Regards Gyro
