My dreads are about 3 weeks old and i have not been using wax. But my hair is locking at the ends and not the root. Can anyone give me some advise or help me in my quest to make my nappy dreads develop in to real dreadlocks?
Uhhmm... locking at the tips and not the roots? that sounds about right for 3 weeks. My advise is to wait it out. Dreads are like babies... there's a gestation period before they even start the development and maturing process. You might get some better responses if you mentioned what method you are using, how you wash your hair, and what your "normal" hair texture is.
im washing my hair every three days with rasta locks residue free tingle shampoo, and im back combing after every wash. and i have naturally straight white people hair haha.
Ya, backcombing should only be done once and the "dreads" that backcombing produces appear to fall out before they start to lock. You don't necessarily have to ignore your hair, but locking is something your hair does naturally, you don't have to do much other than wait...
F.Y.I...nothing is locking at 3 weeks. Its just baby knots. Locks take years to actually lock! Just relax and forget you have hair like everyonelse is saying! =]
thanks for all the advise but i was trying to figure out a way to keep the fly aways from getting all my baby dreadies from forming into one giant dread
Ahoy ... All these peeps are on the money, let your locks do their thing. What you are seeing as a curse is actually a blessing. When your locks start by knotting at the tips, your hair will gradually 'fill' the locks as you wash them ... oh yes, stick with that shampoo. If you want to increase the rate of progress, wear a 'cap' made of the top part of the thinnest pair of stockings when you wash and rinse, keep your head down when rinsing. Wash your hair using the palms of your hands in a circular motion only ... clockwise on the right; anti-clockwise on the left (unless you feel it should all be clockwise due to the whole growth direction of the hair follicle perspective. Wear a tam / beanie as much as possible, especially when sleeping ... yeesh, I think I'm starting to sound like a parrot ... And definitely, definitely stop backcombing, your locks are starting form the tips, and as the hair is collecting from the tips to the base of your locks, you are undoing everything by backcombing ... and especially don't backcomb when your hair is wet, hair is at it's weakest when it is wet.
Just let um form up and if something is looking phatter than you want, you can just rip it into two (starting from the tips)
My dreads are babies too, only a few days old. They're looking great though. I quite like the frizzy halo I have around my head. Palm rolling helps. I would definitely stop backcombing. Just give your hair some time, as everyone's always saying, dreads are a journey. Let me know how your wash goes if you wear a stocking on your head, I'll be doing my first wash on Monday.
